Six years ago

"Our kids are going to be so adorable," Calum said as he gazed into your eyes. You two were laying in bed cuddling, after a long day that resulted in exhaustion.

"Kids?" you questioned, completely shocked. You were only twenty-one and kids were definitely not on your mind. It surprised you that Calum was even thinking about kids.

"Yeah, kids," he said, appearing to be lost in thought as he scooted closer to you on the bed and tucked a piece of hair behind your ear. "'Cause one day, I'm gonna marry you, and then we're going to have a bunch of little us's running around. And by a bunch, I mean three. Specifically two boys and a girl."

"Wow, so it seems like you've put quite a lot of thought into this, Cal. I mean, we're twenty-one! I'm not thinking about kids."

"Y/N, you're the type of girl you fall in love with and want to stay with forever. I mean, from the moment I saw you I could just imagine the rest of my life with you by my side. I want it all with you, I always have. And that includes marriage and kids."

You couldn't help but crack a smile despite the fact that everything about what he just said sort of terrified you. You'd just graduated from college and now you had to try and get into medical school which requires all of your attention. But it was very hard not to imagine what it would be like to raise a family with a guy as great as Calum.

"See! You want it too, I know you do!" he said excitedly. You laughed just because he was so adorable.

"Cal, I would love spending the rest of my life with you. But I just...I never really thought about kids. I mean I pretty much already chose having a career by applying to med school and there's not a lot of time for kids when you're a doctor." You'd always been ambitious about your career and wanted to be a doctor since high school, so kids never really seemed like an option or even that appealing to you.

"You'll come around someday, Y/N. I know you will."

Present day

You thought about that day that Calum had first expressed his desire to be a father. Now here you two were six years later and married but no children. You two decided to get married right after you finished medical school so that you would at least have a little bit of time for a honeymoon and to spend together before you started working. You were in the third year of your residency as a surgeon, so you weren't quite as busy as you had been the past couple years with work, which were filled with crazy forty-eight hour shifts, being at the hospital more than your home, and seeing your patients more than your husband.

You had a rare day off, so you and Calum decided to spend it casually and were getting lunch at a nearby burger joint. You sat at the table while Calum waited to pick up your orders by the counter and grab your drinks. You were looking at a table across the room where a family was eating. There were two kids, probably around the ages of six and ten, both of them boys. You couldn't help but notice how happy the parents looked. The younger of the two boys was having a problem holding his burger due to the fact that his hands were so small. You watched as the dad laughed while his son tried to hold the burger and took as big a bite his tiny mouth would allow him, nearly dropping the burger in the process. You found yourself smiling and longing for the feeling that family had.

"They didn't have Coke, so I just got you a Sprite since I know how you don't like Pepsi. Oh, and I got extra ketchup so...Y/N? Are you even listening to me?" Calum snapped his fingers in front of your face as he sat down across from you, drawing your attention away from the family.

"Yeah, sorry," you said as he placed your drink and burger down in front of you. Calum looked at you suspiciously.

"That was your thinking face. What were you thinking about?" he asked. You pursed your lips in thought.
