"Yeah, Lills, I need to talk to you guys about something, it's pretty important actually and I'm not too sure how to go about it" he revealed, his voice suddenly serious. "But we can't talk here. I have to tell you all . Our spot. Now. Come on." Remus crooked his head and gestured to the girls.
Lily looked towards Mary. "Ha! I knew something was up!" With her signature told-you-so arrogance written on her face as she upturned her nose following closely behind him.
Remus plowed through the halls, checking the shoulders of fellow students, making sure to create a path for the girls to safely walk through as he led the way outside to their favorite hangout spot—a secluded clearing beneath the beech tree by Black Lake.
Posh schools had their advantages and Hogwarts was no exception to that rule. The serene lakeshore was the one place Remus could always find solace at, away from the responsibilities of classwork with his mates sure to be close by.
As the three of them arrived under the tree they were greeted by the rest of the group.
James and Sirius were to the left of the bench. Taunting Peter, as usual. Tossing his library book back and forth just out of his reach. James paused at the sight of Lily, his heart skipping a beat as her apple scented shampoo wafted through the air.
"Oi Evans!" James shouted with a debonair smile, attempting to wave in a motion that both greeted her and exposed the muscular definition of his arm.
"I need your help with the chemistry test tomorrow, I spent all week practicing footy drills for the game and haven't had a chance to review. Plus," James's eyes darkened as he bit his lower lip "you make studying so much more appealing than Professor Slughorn. I love your hands-on approach, Lills. Plus your head is truly magnificent. I know it's why they made you Head Girl. Your brain just can't be beat. It's life changing, honestly." James winked and he was unexpectedly hit in the head with Peter's textbook. James furrowed his brow and looked to Sirius with a fiery wrath of betrayal.
"Oi! Sorry mate! Didn't see you there!" Sirius sniggered, hands up in defense.
Lily huffed at James with an eye roll, brushing him off and turning her back to him— sending her hair swaying, filling the air with subtle notes of lingering apple shampoo, "Ah sorry Love, I can't be your study buddy; I've got a strict 'no inflated egos' policy, and I fear yours might burst my bubble of brilliance." Lily chuffed.
"Oh yeah I know all about bursting your bubble" James taunted, his head crooked sideways as he lifted his chin.
Marlene, blond and athletically built, was speaking with Dorcas Meadows. The sun peaking through the leaves of the beech tree illuminating Dorcas's deep bronzed features and making her eyes glow like rich pools of honey. The two girls were chatting, deep in conversation about their upcoming N.E.W.T tests and making a plan to go over notes to ensure high marks.
The three newcomers settled into the familiar shaded spot. Remus sat next to his girls.
Peter suddenly relieved as James and Sirius appeared to be finishing off their immature game. Remus took a deep breath and began addressing the group, his deep voice commanding attention. The tension that lingered in the air was nearly palpable
"I've got some news I've been keeping from you all. I am not sure how to really bring it up if I'm being honest" Remus began, his voice now tinged with excitement, "I got a letter from my grandfather's attorney last week."
The group held its breath stopping whatever they were doing, each person intrigued.
"As luck would have it, it appears that I've inherited quite a bit of land near Bristol".
