This kind of ghost is not cursed, just unfortunate. They are the spirits of people who met a "sudden death" or death by unnatural causes. Their dispositions vary from aggressive (because their last moment was marked by violence and terror) or to vengeful (because they were murdered) and bitter (because they died before their time) so there is no knowing what they'll do if you were to encounter them. Phi Tai Hong are mostly the spirits of those who were killed in road accidents and small, simple shrines are usually set up at locations where accidents often claim lives to appease the unhappy spirits. Travelers believe that these phi tai hong, who likely died instantly and unknowingly in gruesome accidents, are usually resentful at their destiny. They refuse to move on and like to hang out at the accident site causing deadly mishaps to travelers. Phi tai hong will try to kill other living people in the same manner in which they were killed themselves, and as a consequence they are one of the most feared ghosts in Thai culture. Thai culture blames these vengeful spirits as one of the most difficult to exorcise. This is do to their particularly violent nature and because they actively haunt areas where their deaths took place, including houses. There is another disstinct form of phi tai hong known as tai thang klom or tai thong klom which is the ghost of the woman who died together with her child in her womb. Tai Thang Klom and Phi Tai Klom The most violent and vengeful manifestation of Phi Tai Hong are ghosts of pregnant women who died along with an unborn child in their womb typically do to childbirth complications.
Phi Modern Adaptations
The phi tai hong is a ghost that has been adapted into many movies such as the 2003 thai comedy-horor film Buppah Rahtree and the 2010 film Tai Hong.
