SCORPIUS POV

August 27-28, 2021

Well, at least my day started off normal. It was a 60-something-degree cloudy August afternoon. I was sitting alone on my bed when my parents opened the door and walked into my room. "Scorpius, we are leaving for a couple of days. We trust you to be on your own. There is food in the fridge and $1000 in case you need anything. Will you be ok?" My mom asked.

"Yeah." I said. My mom hugged me and my dad waved. He's less of the physical type. Then they left, and I was alone. I grabbed the book I was reading, Cinder, off my bookshelf to read for the first few hours. I flopped back down on my bed and opened it.

After an hour or so the sun starts to set. Once the sun had disappeared and the world went dark, a bang sounded from my neighbor's house. I glanced over, and all the lights in Rose's room had turned off. Soon after, a million different colors exploded from her house. What the fuck? I opened my window and stuck my head out to watch the bright rays travel through the sky.

The colors started moving and spreading out over town. One of them was heading directly towards my house. Immediately, I shut the window and backed up to the opposite side of the room. I thought closing a window would block a spirit of pure light–it didn't. The pale green, almost white ray passed through my wall towards me. The lights turned off the moment the beam entered the room. It collected and formed a snake.

The snake looked at me and started talking in a creepy voice that scared me even more, Hello Scorpius. I started desperately fidgeting with the strings on my hoodie. I backed up against the wall, pushing it, hoping it would crumble and allow me to run through. Was this snake going to do anything that wasn't terrifying? The whole thing is just unnatural. Snakes don't float or talk and they are definitely not made out of glowing light. Another thing is, how did it know my name?

Scorpius, whatever happens here, stays here. We wouldn't want anyone to know what went down, now would we? It said. At least I knew it was set free in Rose's room so I could talk to her afterward. Someone needs to do some explaining.

I guess you can talk to her. She knows much more than you do. And we can't have that. Then the snake moved forward towards me. When it touched me, I blacked out.

To be honest, I would've blacked out anyway. I was already shaking against the wall, feeling like I was about to pass out. Its voice. I can still feel it standing there. I need to talk to Rose. But I can't move. Help! Help me! Please...

When I woke up, I realized it was already the next day. The first thing I thought was that I needed food. I got up and walked to the kitchen where we still had some leftover muffins from a couple of days ago.

After breakfast, I started walking over to Rose's house. The snake said that I could talk to her about this, so that was exactly what I was going to do. I ran over to her house and knocked on her door.

She opened the door, exhausted. Her usually neat hair was extremely messy, and her curls looked more like knots than normal. She must have just woken up. There was a waffle in her hand.

"Hi, Scorp." She blinked, "What's up?"

"Hi." I said, "So there was this weird snake thing that went through my wall and told me I should talk to you. I have no idea what's going on."

"Well, basically the death eaters have returned." She said.

"Oh." I said, trying to keep my voice steady. I knew that.

"There's more. So I was searching online and there was this button. It asked everyone to click it, so I clicked it, of course, and a bunch of light creatures came out. Then I learned that those were the elements. Like earth, fire, water, air, that stuff. But there are more than just those four. There are twelve main ones and millions of tiny minor ones. And what they do is they will join with someone, who was chosen before and has always been connected with the element. Once they join with that person they have the power to control one of the elements. It is extremely dangerous. People with that power could easily kill anyone. And I, and apparently you, were chosen. So we are the only ones that can defeat the death eaters."

"Oh no."

"But you can't tell anyone okay?" At that exact moment, a small redhead with a bag of popcorn and an extremely shocked expression turned the corner. We both stared at them as he stood there for a moment in silence, then suddenly took off in the opposite direction.

"HUGO!" Rose screamed, chasing after him, "GET BACK HERE!"

"Umm... I should go." I said.

"No!" Rose screamed from farther away, "Stay put. Don't move."

I stood there for a couple of minutes. Rose came back around the corner carrying Hugo while they were squirming around trying to escape.

"I will put you down if you promise not to run away again." Rose said. Hugo nodded and Rose dropped him. I didn't think that Hugo was ready for that though, because his legs gave way beneath him and they fell on their face. "What did you hear?" Rose asked them.

"Umm, like everything." He said.

"Oh shit." Rose said to herself. "Other people aren't supposed to know. It ups the danger for everyone involved. Me and Scorp will probably be in danger because of this, and now you are in danger with no way to protect yourself."

"No." Hugo said. "Because if this is about weird glowing animals, then I have a way to defend myself. There was a ferret in my room that did a secret handshake with me."

Rose quickly turned to look at him, "What did you just say?"

"I think you heard what I said." Hugo answered.

"Tell me exactly what happened." Rose ordered.

"Okie dokie. So I was sitting in my room when boom! Something exploded in your room, so I sat up and stopped counting the ridges on my ceiling, and then a light blue ferret came through the wall, and it was like hey bro, and I was like hey bro, and then we did a secret handshake that I don't know how I knew, and then I was like, wait a second do I know you? And she was like ya man, we gon' be the best duo of all the elements. And then she smirked and disappeared and I was like, I'm dead. And then the room glowed and then it didn't. There, that is the story." He stated.

"Wow." said Rose, "That seems right. You can stay."

"Yay!" Said Hugo.

"Um, so why were we chosen?" I asked.

"Well, you can only be chosen if you have the magic in your genetics. You are chosen by the previous holder of your element." Rose said.

"So what are our elements?" I asked.

"Well, I am water, Scorpius is reality, and Hugo is ice." Rose said.

"And how do we find the others?"

"That is the only thing I don't know."
