ROBOT FIGHT CLUB

"SO I'm thinking, for the main body of it, we should go for-"
"Oh, no. Leo. Please tell me you're not entering in the robot throw down again. That douchebag Kevin beats you every year and then you cry," Ellie said, prompting Adam and Bree to laugh.
"Well this year is different. Chase is on my team, so we're gonna win," Leo said proudly.
"Plus Mr. Davenport agreed to help us," spoke Chase.
"Okay, that feels like cheating," Ellie sighed, going back to her food.
"It's not. The competition is open to everyone," Leo defended.
"The rulebook may not say it is, but we all know it is," Ellie retorted, taking another bite of her food.
"Are you going or not?" Leo asked.
"Of course I'm going," Ellie rolled her eyes. "I back you up every year that you lose. And this year, I'll still be there, even if you cheat and lose."
Leo rolled his eyes, turning to Adam and Bree. "Are you guys going?"
Adam looked at Ellie, then responded, "Yeah, sure. I'll go."
"Sorry, I have anywhere else to be," Bree feigned sadness.

LEO walked into school the next day looking royally ticked off.
"What's wrong with you, did your pet iguana die?" Ellie joked.
Leo stopped in his tracks, shooting her an annoyed look, "Actually, yeah. Iggy did die over the weekend."
Ellie slapped a hand over her mouth, "I didn't get a funeral invitation."
Leo reached for his book bag, producing a piece of paper and handing it to her. "It's Thursday, since the smackdown is tomorrow," he spoke sadly. "Would you say a few words?"
"Of course I will," Ellie comforted. "But no, seriously, why do you look like you have a license to kill?"
"Because Big D destroyed our robot yesterday. Chase and I have to start over completely," Leo complained.
"I'm not surprised," Ellie rolled her eyes, noting the man's ego in her head. "You do realize the smackdown is tomorrow though, right?"
"I know. I'm gonna be so busy tonight, but I have full confidence; I'm gonna win this year," Leo said determinedly.
"If you say so. . ." Ellie trailed off, looking across the lobby at Andy, who was approaching the two. "Hey, Andy."
Leo turned around, facing the girl. "Oh, hello."
It wasn't often that Ellie's two friend groups mixed, and when they did, it was awkward.
"How have you been, Leo?" Andy asked kindly.
"Oh, you know. Beloved pet just died, stepdad crushed my dreams, I have to make an entire combat robot tonight -- the usual," Leo replied in a monotone.
"Oh, shoot. The smackdown is tomorrow. I forgot about that. Ellie, I was gonna ask you to come by the recycling drive after school tomorrow," Andy said dejectedly.
"Oh, well I can still swing by," Ellie offered. Andy had been trying, and desperately failing, to revive the school's environmental club since last year. Perry hadn't exactly made it easy, but the drive was a sign of good times ahead. "I can make both, I promise."
