The tension in the air was palpable as the patrol led by Riverecho prowled along the border, their senses alert for any signs of trouble. Lavapaw, eager to prove herself, followed closely behind, her heart pounding with excitement.

Suddenly, Riverecho lifted her tail in a silent signal, her ears twitching as she detected something amiss. Lavapaw's fur bristled with anticipation as she strained to hear what Riverecho had sensed.

"I hear something," Riverecho whispered, her voice barely audible over the rustle of leaves.

"What is it?" Lavapaw whispered back, her senses on high alert.

"SkyClan is on our territory," Doveripple whispered urgently. "Quick, Clawpaw, go get Nettleyew and tell him. We need reinforcements."

"Why me?" Clawpaw complained, her voice louder than intended.

"Ssh!" hissed Raincall, but it was too late. Sharptail, the patrol leader, was already heading their way.

"Clawpaw!" Lavapaw hissed, her eyes wide with alarm. "You've given us away!"

"They're on our territory!" Clawpaw yowled, her panic evident. Yeah, no DUH!

"Mouse-brain!" Raincall hissed, his frustration evident. "Go get reinforcements now!"

As Clawpaw dashed off, Lavapaw and Leafpaw remained hidden, watching as the situation escalated. Sharptail was at the center of the fight. Lavapaw watched, horrified as Sharpclaw's warriors fought the mentors. Sharptail leaped on Riverecho and lashed out. His blow found its mark, striking Riverecho down. Lavapaw's heart clenched with sorrow as she watched her mentor fall.

With a final, painful effort, Riverecho urged Lavapaw and Leafpaw to flee, their safety her utmost concern even as she lay, dying in the clearing. With tears in their eyes, they obeyed, running back to camp to alert their Clanmates.

Upon their return, Lavapaw wasted no time in delivering the urgent message. Nettleyew sprang into action, rallying the Clan to defend their territory. As nearly half of RiverClan raced after Nettleyew, Lavapaw, Leafpaw, and Clawpaw followed. The RiverClan patrol entered the clearing to see Riverecho, Doveripple, and Raincall being driven back towards the trees.

"RiverClan!" Nettleyew yowled, "Attack!"

Tens of RiverClan warriors came pouring out of the undergrowth, slowly pushing the SkyClan warriors into the river. The moment the SkyClan patrol was fully in the river, RiverClan turned the water against them, and soon most of SkyClan was either running or desperately swimming back to shore.

In the aftermath of the battle, Marshleaf announced that Riverecho hadn't made it, the Clan mourned the loss of Riverecho, and Lavapaw's grief was tinged with anger. She felt the need to blame someone, and she knew who had caused this. Clawpaw's negligence had cost them dearly, and Lavapaw couldn't shake the feeling of betrayal.

As Rainystar announced Stormfrost as Lavapaw's new mentor, Lavapaw couldn't help but feel a sense of bitterness. The bond she had shared with Riverecho was irreplaceable, and now Clawpaw's carelessness had shattered it forever.

Facing Clawpaw, Lavapaw's words were sharp with accusation. "You killed her," she accused, her voice trembling with emotion. "Your incompetence cost Riverecho her life."

Clawpaw's protests fell on deaf ears as Lavapaw turned away, her heart heavy with grief and anger. The loss of Riverecho would haunt her, a constant reminder of the consequences of failure and negligence in times of crisis.
