CARVER RESIDENCE
[ THE NEXT MORNING,
7:43 AM. ]

...

"MAKENNA! YOU'RE GONNA BE LATE!" Dovani shouted in the air as she heard shuffling footsteps rushing down the stairs. The smell of ham and cheese sandwiches flooded her nose as she completed her sisters lunch. First week back from Christmas break, MaKenna went to school from Semaji's parents house along with Sahaji.

Now, she was back home as of yesterday afternoon after visiting Envee and the twins.

"I'm coming, geez." The eleven year old huffed, coming down the stairs with her uniform on and a stack on uno cards in her hand. Dovani pats her sew in, seeing her sisters hair.

"Kenna.. what's goin' on with your ponytail, baby?"

"Nothing?"

"Sit on the damn stool. You know yo' ass look a fool."

"Bars!" The little girl shouted which made Dovani laugh as she carefully untangled the ponytail from the holder.

Early in the morning, sunlight peeked through the curtains as Dovani gently brushed Makenna's hair, preparing to style it into a neat ponytail. The younger girl sat between Dovani's knees on a stool, her school uniform already on and her breakfast waiting for her on the kitchen table.

"Make sure it's not too tight this time," MaKenna cautioned, wincing a bit at the memory of last week's too-tight hairstyle.

Dovani chuckled softly, her hands skilled and careful. "You want to look neat for school, right?"

Makenna nodded, her expression serious. "Yeah, I have to be the neatest. Mrs. Jordan says it's important to look tidy."

As Dovani gathered the soft curls into her hands, she made sure to be gentle, smoothing the edges with a light touch of hair cream to tame any flyaways. "There, that should do it. What do you think? Is it the right tightness?" she asked, securing the ponytail with a bright blue elastic band that matched Makenna's school colors.

Makenna reached up to feel her hair and nodded with approval, a small smile playing on her lips. "It's perfect, Dovi. Thank you!"

"You're welcome, sweetness. Now, eat your breakfast quickly. You don't want to miss the bus," Dovani replied, helping Makenna off the stool and guiding her towards the kitchen.

Dovani offered, pulling out a chair to sit beside her. Makenna nodded vigorously, milk dribbling slightly from the corner of her mouth.

"Yeah, can we? I keep mixing up 'necessary' and 'definitely'," she admitted, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand.
