Prologue

They were inseparable during their time at Hogwarts, despite Poppy's last name, which steered most students away the instant they heard who she was a descendant of.

But not Newt.

He had found her sitting at the edge of the Black Lake one dark day, her hand outstretched to the octopus that had stuck its head out of the Black Lake and allowed her to feed it some fish she had found dried out by the other students, left to be eaten by the birds.

But Frank the Octopus was starving. He hadn't had a decent meal in weeks because of the school's lack of ocean food for it.

Right then was when Newt Scamander had decided that Persephone Gaunt would be his best friend.
