Before the clock struck midnight, Yu Haibara had died. The younger boy had overdosed, he had overdosed on the drugs bought to celebrate my birthday. January Fifteen. That day no longer belonged to me. It no longer celebrated me being granted the ability to see another year, it became a cruel reminder that Haibara wouldn't be able to.

Suguru took it the hardest out of the four of us. Haibara fucking adored him, and of course, that feeling was reciprocated. How could it not be? He was the sweetest kid, always walking around with a smile on his face meant for anyone who needed it. He made it easy to love him. Now he's gone. That's not to say the rest of us weren't affected by his death. Whatever sparked that argument that night, combined with the grief, left us at odds.

Suguru and Satoru hadn't spoken to anyone, much less others. Shoko was the only one staying in contact with me, but even still it was one-word responses. As much as it hurt, I tried not to take it to heart. We were all struggling to wrap our heads around what had happened. We were all struggling to accept the fact that Haibara was gone, and we'd never have him back.

We were all struggling to get that image out of our heads, him on the floor with the usual light in his eyes drained as he choked on his own foamy puke. Kento trying to shake him back to life. Shoko scrambling to call the police. Satoru running around to hide the drugs.
