Phoenix POV '
"are you sure you have everything?" mom asked me for the hundredth time.

"yes mom i am sure, and if i need any thing i can drive to the store." i tell her.

"okay i am just worried. my baby is going to be living all on his own." mom whipped under her eyes.

"well not totally alone i will have a roommate." i remind her and point to the empty bed on the other side of the room.

"that's true but you will be away from me." she says and pulled me into a hug.

"i promise i will call and text mom don't worry." i hugged her tighter.

this was hard as it has always just been the two of us. Dad skipped when i was young, so my mom raised me all on her own. i owe everything to my mom, which is why i worked hard to get this scholarship. as i knew we didn't have money to be able to pay for me to go to school.

"i know, i just want you to know i am so proud of you." she placed her hand on my cheek.

"thanks mom i love you." and i really did she was the best mom anyone could ask for.

"i know, now i better leave now or might not ever leave." she offered a slight smile.

"i will walk with you back to your car." i sling my arm over her shoulder.

she nodded and we started our way back. she had just over a four hour drive back home. but she was going to leave tomorrow to get an early start. as it was late to drive now.

"alright i love you, i will text you once i head out in the morning." mom claimed as we got to her car.

"okay have a good night" i hugged her one last time.

she nodded and climbs into her car and starts to drive off. i started to make my way back to my room. so that i could finish getting all my things organized. but when i walked back into my room someone else was there.

" Hi i am Jason are you Phoenix?" he almost looked unsure.

"that's me nice to meet you." i smiled and stuck out my hand.

"you too" he nods.

" i hope you don't mind i took that side of the room? i am open to switching." i was not about to start our time together in an argument.

"it's fine" he claimed and placed a bag down on his side of the room.

"alright we'll where are you from?" i mean might as well get to know him.

"Pittsburg you?" he asked.

"just outside of South Carolina." i replied.

"so your pretty close to home that will be nice." he was right it will be.

"ya just about a four hour drive not to bad." i nod.

"Jason where do you want this." a younger boy came into the room huffing.

"Caleb just put it on the bed." he says and he dropped the bag and let out a sigh.

"oh wow this is nice smaller then i thought though." a woman announced as she walked into the room. but stopped when she saw me.

"hi i am Angie Jason's mom you must be his roommate." she asked.

"yes Phoenix" introduced myself.

"well Phoenix do you play sports? Jason here is on the basketball team." his mom placed her hand on his shoulder and he looked at her with wide eyes.

"ya football" i replied.

"is your family here i work love to meet them?" she asked.

"no my mom just left back to her hotel. she will be heading out early in the morning." i informed her.

"no one else here with you?" she almost looked sad.

"it's just me and my mom. i am an only child." i replied.

"well you are more then welcome to join us for diner." she offered.

"thanks but i am sure you want to have one last meal with your family. i will be okay here, getting settled into the room." i declined i mean it was a great offer but i was not about to impose.

"well it's no imposition, but if your sure you fine to stay here that's okay. but the offer is still there if you change your mind." she smiled.

"ahh there you are, it was a nightmare trying to find a spot to park the car." and older man who looked like Jason walked into the room.

"honey this is Phoenix, Jason roommate he is on the football team." his mom introduced us.

"nice to meet you young man." he nods.

"like wise." i nod.

"well don't mind us, i am sure you want to unpack too. we will leave you to it." his mom smiled.

i give her a polite smile and then moved closer to my side so i could do just that. i wasn't trying to be rude but i was more productive with music. so i placed my headphone is so i could get in the zone to start to unpack.

—————-
about three hours later i was unpacked, and felt pretty settled into my room. Jason mom tried to get me to go to diner with then again. but once again i politely declined. and after her husband stepped in, she took my no for an answer.

i sat down on my bed and sent mom a text to let her know that all my clothes and boxes where put away. when Jason walked into our room.

"hey man sorry about my mom. she can be very pushy." he says as he sat down on his bed.

"it's fine." i assure him and it was.

"i am glad you seem chill, i was worried my roommate was going to suck. but i think we will get alone alright. and we will have similar schedules with both of us playing sports." he claimed and all of what he said was true.

"just don't touch my shit with out asking and we will be  right as rain." i spoke the truth.

"deal" he nods.
