"What do you think you're doing?" A voice made Vera flinch as she immediately threw the phone on the bed.

Rurik stood in front of the bathroom, his wet hair and tight-fitted t-shirt molding to his chiseled physique, commanding attention.

Vera wasn't able to say anything as Rurik approached the bed, she was sure he would be mad but instead, he took his cell phone and glanced at the message.

"Fuck," he whispered to himself as he read the message, his eyes gazing at the sentences over and over. His mind was awash with thoughts, she had read it. Damn it.

"I'm sorry," she mumbled timidly which made him glance at her and sigh. She looked scared, much more than she would've been.

"It's fine. Just don't go through my personal items like that," she nodded immediately at his authoritative tone while he went outside the room, leaving her silence again. He seemed annoyed but he didn't say anything to me...? Why?

Vera was taken aback by his unexpected behavior. She had anticipated him to react violently towards her, similar to her abusive father. However, he did not. Despite his non-aggressive response, Vera was still concerned about her safety and wondered if he would harm her once he gained her trust.

She could hear yelling from outside, Rurik arguing with someone over the phone more like ordering them. Understanding the Russian, she knew it was something huge but at this point, Vera felt uncomfortable and couldn't sleep, not even for a blink.

As soon as the door opened, her gaze snapped towards the furious man who barged in while engrossed in his phone.

"As my wi- or someone who lives with me, you deserve to know what happened." She nodded shortly but felt her heart crushing slowly when he hadn't addressed her as his wife yet she knew it was only a contract marriage.

"I'm sure it's one of my enemies who was involved in this. I've told some of my people to trace the number and find out where he is. We've been trying to track him but he hasn't been out yet," he explained with his nonchalant tone as Vera could only stare at him. "But you don't have to worry. He won't be bothering you, not until I'm alive."

She nodded yet again with a bewildered expression. "Thank you for telling me Rurik. I appreciate it." He gave her a half smile, placing the phone on his bedside table.

He began by mentioning his sister, and she looked amused. "She can be quite a handful," he said.

"She's nice. I like her," Vera replied softly, making Rurik shake his head with a slight husky chuckle leaving his lips. "What?"

"Nothing. I'm glad she was nice to you." frowning at his response, she sat a little closer to him on the bed.

"You know siblings. She teases me a lot, that's it," he replied once he noticed Vera's concern which made her nod immediately.

None of them conversed for a few seconds before Rurik cleared his throat. "You should sleep. It's late."

She bobbed her head with a yawn and settled back under the covers. A smile appeared on her face as she closed her eyes, determined to return to her dream world. She felt happy, a little progress in a day but it was something.

Feeling Rurik lying down beside her, Vera surrendered to the darkness.

The morning had fallen upon when her eyes opened and she got ready for the day. Rurik had already left as her gaze fixated on his side of the bed while a sticky note was stuck on her side.

"I have to deal with some mission issues. I'll meet you at the dining table.

-Rurik"

Had been written on it which made her smile.
