Chapter 29

When the weekend came, Monae decided to do something she hadn't done in years. That was visit her hometown to see her brother.

"I am surprised you called and said you'll be here this weekend. Thought you were just talking at first", said CJ as he sat on the couch.

Monae sat on one of the chairs. "No...I just...I needed to get away. A lot has been going on these past few months", said Monae.

CJ nods. "I told mama you were coming", said CJ.

Monae rolls her eyes. "Oh really? What did she say?", asked Monae.

"First she said "did she finally get rid of that boy?' Then she said 'oh I don't care just tell her to come see me'", said CJ.

Monae smiles a little and shakes her head.

"What?", asked CJ.

"Me come see her? It works both ways", said Monae.

"You're right. That's what I told her. So she came...she's outside in the back.", said CJ.

Monae looked at CJ.

"You want her to come in here instead?", asked CJ.

"No...I'll go out there", said Monae as she stood up and began walking outside.

Once Monae walked out her mom stood up and looked at her. A smile came across her face.

"My beautiful baby", said her mom. "You know that was the first thing I said to when—"

"When I was born. Yes. I know. That story was told a million times", said Monae as fake smiled.

"Oh come on Monae. We have got to just get over what happened. When you have kids you'll understand why I did what I did. You know I love you. You're actually my favorite.", said her mom. "But during that time you kept disrespecting me. I let you off the hook multiple times."

Monae looks down. "Okay...yea...and I said sorry", said Monae. "Mom I'm not even mad that you kicked me out, I understood that. But it's just...you never apologized for doing it."

"Monae, I'm sorry okay? I'm not sorry for kicking you out. I'm sorry for letting you grow up so fast...I was hardly home and well I guess that caused you to go looking for company", said her mom. "I just...I thought that you would come back but you didn't. I mean I figured because you've always been determined, strong and independent...but I didn't want you to be gone as long as you did. Block me and not even tell your brother where you moved."

Monae looks at her mom. "I was upset...but...now I—"

"Ay Monae, there's a um Caleb at the door looking for you", said CJ as he peaked his head outside.

Monae quickly turned around.

"Said he was your boyfriend", said CJ.

"Um, excuse me mom", said Monae as she walked toward CJ. "You said Caleb?"

"Yea", said CJ.

"Excuse me", said Monae as she walked into the house and outside again  through front door.

Caleb is sitting on the porch.

"Why are you alive?", asked Monae. "Better yet, why are you here?"

"Thought I'd meet the family during this little visit of yours", said Caleb normally.

"Are you crazy?", asked Monae.

"No. Just patient", he said as he stood up.

Monae backed up a little.

"And about that whole dead thing. I'm military baby. I know a bomb when I see one", said Caleb.

"What the fuck do you want from me?", asked Monae.

"I want you to come to your senses. You know you want me, you know damn well you over Tyren—"

"I wasn't", said Monae.

"You were. The first time we had sex, that wash just sex to you. But after a while that was love to you and you know it.", said Caleb.

Monae didn't say again.

"Right now you have mixed emotions and I understand that. So I'll be patient with you. But when you calm down and sit back and actually think about things, you'll realized that i wasn't doing this shit to be your enemy.", said Caleb. "Just tough love."

"I'll kill you in your sleep then", said Monae.

"Then I'll sleep with one eye open", said Caleb.

"Why do you wanna be with me?", asked Monae. "Especially after I tried to kill you."

"You trying to kill me got me mad I'm not going to lie. Also...paranoid, yea...but...look I'm sorry for doing something that you felt wasn't needed but I did. Anyways... I wanna be with you because you're the type of woman I need. The type of woman that can handle me, the type of woman that can understand me. That's why I want you mama", said Caleb.

Monae looks to the side.

"I'm sorry for killing your little boyfriend but I need to be your only focus. And Rico...well Rico wasn't supposed to go out like that but I warned him", said Caleb. "Point is when I want something, I work for it no matter the obstacles. I know you don't want me to meet your family right now so I'll leave. I just came so we wouldn't fight again."

Caleb stood up.

"But I'll give you some to yourself.", he said as he walked to her.

"Touch me and I will cut off your lips", said Monae.

Caleb smirked as he stopped walking.

"I'm not playing", said Monae.

"Okay", he said as he walked to his car. "Tell your mother hello."

Monae watched him leave as her mom came outside.

"Where's your friend going?", asked her mom.

"Something came up. Besides this is time so just to catch up. Let's go get lunch", said Monae.

"Okay. Let me go get Chris", said her mom as she went back in to get CJ.
