The Red String: Tangled Up

Chapter 1 - Something isn't right

Authors Note: This story picks up from Chapter 14 of "The Red String", my other Fanfiction. Please make sure to read chapters 1-13 of that story first, if you haven't already.

„FOUR" the three voices yelled in unison, loud enough to bring SMG4 back to reality.

He opened his eyes and immediately regretted coming back from his temporary unconsciousness, as the pain of hitting the floor at full speed finally made itself noticeable.

SMG4 attempted to get up, but didn't get very far before almost being tackled by Meggy. "Four, oh my gosh what happened?? Are you okay?? Why are you laying on the floor?" Meggy hugged SMG4 and scanned his face, trying to see if he was hurt anywhere.

"I'm fine, I'm fine" SMG4 said, rubbing his head and actually getting up this time.

"I just got pushed back from some.. sudden burst of energy and landed on my ass"

SMG4 looked over to SMG3, checking if that indirect formulation was enough to give away what he had just done.

SMG3's eyes widened. "Sudden burst of energy?" he said, as he stepped back.
SMG4 smiled. He knew he could rely on SMG3's quick thinking in this situation.

"from the lake water" SMG4 looked at SMG3 and raised his right hand.

He wasn't wearing his glove and the hand was clearly wet.

It was now clear to any onlooker that SMG4 had dipped his hand in the mysterious Fanfiction-Trope Water.

The same water, that caused all these Memes to transform into weird AU-Versions of themselves.

The same water, that caused SMG3 to see a red string tied around his finger.

And the same water, that now caused SMG4 to see a red string tied around his finger as well.

SMG4 smiled slightly, taking a closer look at the sting, following its thin line with his eyes.
Thanks to SMG3's confession just moments prior, he already knew what to expect. A thin, red, glowing string tied around his finger that lead directly to...

To...

Huh.

SMG4 froze.

This was unexpected.

According to Boopkins website and SMG3, the string was supposed to lead to your soulmate, the person you're connected to most in this world. For SMG3, this person seemed to be SMG4.

It would only make sense that SMG4 would, in turn, be connected to SMG3 now.

Two Meme guardians, one of the living Memes and one for the dead Memes, connected by fate and now also a string! A perfect, reasonable story!

But instead, SMG4 found his string leading away from SMG3, somewhere into the darkness of the forest.

Watching the string disappear into the distance terrified SMG4. He was suddenly filled with an unknown feeling of dread, some form of primal instinct telling him that something was wrong – something was NOT how it was supposed to be.

His eyes darted back to his hand. All the confidence he used to even dip his hand in mysterious water had seemingly vanished, being replaced by fear and worry instead.
Did something go wrong?

Did he fuck up dipping his hand in water somehow??

Did he..

"Did you-" SMG3 began to ask, drawing SMG4's attention back to the people around him.
