Sebastián was down there, scraping the rock floor beneath him, getting his fingers dirty. It wasn't his first time in a cell, maybe that's why his father had made that decision. But there was something different this time around, 'cause, he wasn't in Gravesfield anymore, not some backwoods spot in the States. This place was something else entirely, straight out of a nightmare, filled with witches and demons that weren't even twisted versions of his own world
How could something so simple go so wrong? It was a three-step plan: swap the camp records, change the pickup address, and make sure Luz hopped on that bus straight to that stupid camp so I could enjoy the rest of my summer in peace
Who in their right mind could've messed this up? Oh sure, three steps wouldn't have been enough to contain Noceda's weirdness. That's why I made sure she wasn't bringing snakes, spiders, or some other critter. But no one told me a stupid book and an owl would drag me into hell with this maniac! And of course, she skates through trouble like always, because, you know, the loony with serious screws loose fits right in here, and I end up in a cell with guards straight out of the Black Plague era. Wonderful years by the way, that's for sure.
"Bravo, Sebastián!" he replied sarcastically. "You're gonna rot in a cell. Obviously, you're the pride of your dad"
He rubbed his face, smudging it with dust, letting out a long sigh. Couldn't even begin to think up a plan to get outta there. His day had gone from bad to worse, and then to much, much worse. Part of him felt guilty for not sticking with Luz. Even if she was the one who got him into this mess, she didn't deserve to be alone, not in that chaotic, twisted place, with fairies wanting to peel your skin and creatures eating each other like it was the most normal thing in the world
"So, Sebastián" said another voice, a guard standing in front of his cell, though facing away from him. "Care to tell me why you're gonna rot in this cell?"
Even if the figure in front of him had a much more human silhouette compared to the creature that captured him, he didn't want to be fooled by appearances, not in a place where everything impossible was now a possibility. Sebastián backed away from the bars.
"Not of your business" he replied disdainfully
"Well, you're right, I don't care, but it's always good to talk" the guard shrugged. "Healers say it's good for the mind"
"You mean doctors, right? Or psychologists?"
"What? No, healers" the guard emphasized, gesturing with his hands. "What, you're gonna tell me you've never heard of healers in your life?"
The guard turned to face Sebastián, pointing at his face through the mask. For a split second, Sebastián tried to see through it, but it didn't take long before he gave up when the guard eliminated any possibility of being anything but human
"Is that why you cut your ears?"
Sebastián huffed, wishing this was nothing more than a nightmare. He leaned his body against the wall before letting himself fall and sit on the floor, completely defeated by the situation. He wanted to believe that nothing worse could happen and wasn't willing to risk any potential danger, not when he still had to find Luz to get out of there
"Why would I cut my ears?" His tone was already heavy with weariness. He covered himself with the hood of his hoodie before attempting to look the guard in the eyes. "What kind of question is that?"
