Blue Jay

I hate you, blue jay.

With all my heart

Though you have pretty feathers

Painting the sky with your promises

Your voice is stolen.

You copy the call of those around you

Pretending like you fit in

But really you're meaningless

Because you don't have a voice of your own.

Whenever you try to speak

It comes out in squaks, frightening all the birds around you

Nobody likes a bluejay.

All they do is bully the other birds

Pretending that they're the ruler of the bird bath

I will let you swim in mine

When you stop being such a pest

When you find a voice of your own

When you stop trying to scare the other birds away.

Until you stop mocking those beautiful songs around you

Pretending that they're yours

I will love you

But that day will never come

Because you're a blue jay

And all you will be good at is pretending to be somebody you aren't

Because the real you isn't as pretty as your feathers.
