"And that looks like it's going to wrap it up for tonight." My best friend calls out as the last notes of K.O. Ring out in the studio.Cheers sound from everyone around us. The first song of this E.P. Is complete. Me and Haiden have been cowriting his music together for the last couple years and have been friends for another couple years before that. It honestly is a really great arrangement we have going on here. He gets the recognition he deserves while I am able to share my thoughts without millions of strangers watching me. I get to keep my privacy and get feedback for my lyricism.
Here in this moment nothing can top the high you feel when seeing the result of your hard work. The weeks we had spent configuring the bass line and the little rhythmic sections. The hours spent hunched over my guitar trying to figure out the right strumming pattern.
I feel like I'm on cloud nine. I can't help but reach into my pocket and go to tell Luke before I remember he is currently playing a show. Disappointment flashes across my features before remembering what is to come tonight. Then the energy is back and I am feeling like a live wire. After being together for a year we finally have the Greenlight from the management team for Luke to NOT be single. Every single time It had been brought up before they'd drone on and on about how he has to look and act a certain way and publicity until it sounded like the teachers from Charlie Brown. But for some reason they finally said yes. I'm unsure if its to cover up the fact that his other bandmate just secretly got married and they need something to cover it up in the media, but I'm happy none the less.
"What has you looking like you're going to spontaneously combust?" He laughs in a way that's clearly playful and teasing. I won't lie to you, Haiden is a very conventionally attractive man. All of the shows I've been to thus far has had hordes of young women pining over the blonde. He does kind of ooze sex appeal. He wiggles his eyebrows at me suggestively. "Does this have to do with your mystery man?" He nudges me while cleaning up our equipment before we head out.
"How'd you know?" I ask incredulously, my hands falling to my sides in something like a mock tantrum. God, I knew I sucked at hiding things but I didn't think it was THAT bad.
"Seriously,?" Haiden says as were walking out the studio doors. He looks at me with a look that basically says to 'cut the crap'. "You've been only half here all night, every 5 seconds you check your phone to see if he texted back. All while having a smile on your face as bright as my stage lights. That is seemingly only reserved for him." He stops talking and I assume he's done before he stops in is tracks. Dead pan as we are walking toward our cars "Valerie Jade if you don't stop clicking that damn pen in your hand I am going to throw it"
Pausing, I finally take a second to realize what everyone else has been seeing all night. I do in fact quit clicking the pen and slide it in my pocket. The urge to smack me leave his features. I get serious for a moment. A raw hope takes over when I look up at my friend. "Tonight's the night Haid."
As soon as the words leave my mouth he's picking me up in a hug and spinning me around. If anyone knows how important this is to me other than Luke. It's him. He finally puts me down a smile bigger than mine on his face. Both of us giggling with joy. "Are you serious?" He exclaimed.
My smile grows wider thinking about my sweet Luke and how excited he must be to tell the world about us. I just nod slowly and look down. I love the effects this man has on me. "Tonight he is going to casually mention his girlfriend on stage and we're going to hard launch tomorrow at the 'family dinner as he calls it" I giggle loving how close he is too his bandmates. "Which also happens to be when I get to meet his best friends slash bandmates"
"That's amazing I am so happy for you." He smiles sincerely.
"On that note I do need to head home so I can try to make the apartment look decent before we have guests anywhere near our apartment" I tell him.
We say our goodbyes and get in our own vehicles. I make the uneventful drive home in about 20 minutes. Once in the door I put my things away.
I look around our LA apartment and notice that a lot of the boxes are gone. Luke must've had a chance to unpack some before he left earlier. I walk to the bathroom to take a shower before I eat and start unpacking. The absence of Luke's toothbrush and cologne is very noticeable on the bathroom counter. He probably just took it with him for the show.
After I shower I begin unpacking our bedroom things. About 5-10 boxes in I realized I Haven't found any of Luke's things yet. I must have a lot more things him. I laugh to myself.
I keep unpacking until my eyelids feel heavy and my arms are sore. I decide to finally lay down in our bed and just let Luke wake me up when he gets home.
Except that never happened.
The night came and went until I woke up to sunlight filtering through the windows. I immediately notice I am still alone in bed.I quickly grab my phone and dial Luke's number. Straight to voicemail. I go to text him again.
