I loved the YA Elite series by Vivien Summer as a teen and when I reread in my twenties I noticed so many problematic aspects especially with the toxic relationship between the protagonist and the love interest. The power imbalance and gaslighting made me really uncomfortable and I was shocked how that can manipulate young people into thinking that any of that is okay. I decided to write an OC protagonist while keeping the setup and main storyline. I also aged up the chracters.
