The burning grains of sand pressed into the wolfdog's paw with every step, leaving it cracked, swollen and painful. She had been sweating profusely for most of the journey, but her body had little water left to give, and now she suffered without relief. How much longer? She preferred not to think about it as she trudged one dreadful step after the other. But now she needed to know. Because she didn't think she could go on like this much longer.

Elena had been traveling for a total of two weeks now. Two weeks too long In her opinion. In the desert, less than that could kill a wolf. She was lucky.

Her pelt was matted, knotted, caked with sand and dirt and yet remained ungroomed. What was once a brilliant white would remain a dull grey for many days to come. How could she worry about that when she was slowly dying of hunger and thirst? Or perhaps it was the heat that was killing her. She reminded herself why she was doing this.

Once step after the other. Just keep walking. Just keep walking. Just keep... swimming? She began to dream of water, lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, even the strange human pools that she had swam in during her time as a pet! Oh how long it had been since she'd seen water! She told herself to keep going keep going keep...

Finally, her battered body could not take the cruel treatment of its' mistress any longer. She collapsed, panting, and in immense pain. Just before everything went dark, she caught a glimpse of green just ahead of her. She had almost made it. The last of the water left her body in the form of a single teardrop. She had come so close, so close, so...

It was the cool night breeze that woke her up. Was she dead? She felt cold, very cold in the desert night. Her fur was covered in Dew. Dew? She slowly tried to get up, but collapsed once again on the cooling sand. Dew! She frowned at the drops dropping off  her fur, but wasted no time licking them up, pearls of precious, life-giving water with her sandpaper tongue. Ahead of her still was the green land she had almost reached. So she wasn't dreaming! Forgetting her weakness in her excitement, she tried to stand again, and once more landed on the sand with a small 'poof.'

'Rats.'

Slowly and painfully, Elena crawled to the place that was sure to be her salvation. Her mouth felt like it was filled with the dry crumbly sand beneath her, and her muscles screamed and protested with every agonizing movement, but her will to survive led her on.

She hoped she wasn't dreaming, as she at last reached the edge of the greenery. She stretched her tongue to lick a single drop of dew from the leaf of a nearby shrub. The wetness felt divine as it trickled into her mouth. Was this what it was like in heaven? She felt a small jolt of renewed strength return to her battered body and she limped further in. Her eyes went wide as moons when she saw it before her.

Water!

She would've cried had she had the tears to do so, after so long, she had made it and she had found water. She dipped her head in gratefully, lapping up mouthful after mouthful of the freshest water she'd ever tasted. Once she had started, she couldn't stop, vigorously drinking and drinking the cool amazing liquid until her stomach was distended, and to the untrained observer, it seemed that she may be expecting pups. Even then, she gulped mouthful after mouthful, as if she feared she may never drink again. She finally could not drink any longer, and stopped, only to vomit up most of it on a puddle on the ground. She thought she would feel good, but she only felt sick and bloated, yet somehow, still thirsty. The claws of hunger were also beginning to awaken, clawing fiercely at her stomach, but she curled up into a ball, wincing from the immense pain in her abdomen, until she finally fell into the grip of sleep... Before she drifted off, she thought she saw a figure run across the oasis, or perhaps several. She was too far lost in the haze of sleep to wake up, but subconsciously, she knew what it was she saw as her eyelids fluttered closed for the last time that night.

Wolves!

Suddenly, Elena got out her mobile phone and messaged the leader of Oasis Pack. "Greetings, great alpha, I am a newcomer here, but have made it this far through blistering desert days, and would like to join Oasis Pack." She sent the message and waited.
