Maui was blasted out of the sky never to be seen again. His magical hook and Te Fiti's heart were lost to the sea.

And 1,000 years later is where our story truly starts.

"Where even now..." Tala, the village elder and crazy lady, said to the children as she held up two paintings of monsters.

"1,000 years later," Tala continued, "Te Kā and the demons of the deep still hunt for the heart.

The children were all terrified except one young girl in the front with a flower in her hair. (I'll give you a hint. That's Moana.)

"Hiding in a darkness that will continue to spread," Tala said as she held up a map and poured thick ink onto it, "chasing away our fish, draining the life from island after island, until every one of us is devoured by the bloodthirsty jaws of inescapable death!"

One boy began wailing as another fell unconscious. Moana just giggled and clapped her hands.

"But one day..." Tala said, "the heart will be found by someone who will be accompanied by a stranger to our island, and together they will journey beyond our reef, find Maui, deliver him across the great ocean to restore Te Fiti's heart, and save us all."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa! Thank you, Mother. That's enough." Chief Tui, Moana's father, said as he entered the hut.

"Papa," Moana said as she shuffled into her father's arms

"Papa," Moana said as she shuffled into her father's arms.

"No one goes outside the reef," Tui continued as he scooped Moana into his arms. "And no strangers will come to our island. We are safe here. There is no darkness. There are no monsters."

At that moment, he accidentally knocked a post, revealing a tapestry of Marshmallow, the fabled monster of ice and snow. More tapestries fell, covering the kids' sights from light with monsters.

"Monsters!" one kid cried as the rest all ran around screaming.

"There's no monsters, no monsters..." Tui tried to reason as he was tackled by all the kids. "No, there is nothing beyond our reef, but storms and rough seas."

"I'm gonna throw up!" one kid shouted as Moana jumped out of the Tackle-Chief-Pile.

"As long as we stay on our very safe island, we'll be fine," Tui continued.

Moana wasn't listening. She saw something behind the tapestry of Te Fiti's island.

"The legends are true," Tala said to her son. "A stranger will appear and someone will have to go with them."

Ducking under the tapestry, Moana saw the beautiful ocean.

"Mother," Tui said, "Motunui is paradise, and no strangers have ever come to our shores. Who would want to go anywhere else?"

——

After wandering through the village, Moana found the beach.

Smiling and giggling, she walked across the sand and to the water. She then smiled as a pink and yellow seashell washed up.

Moana bent down to grab it, but then looked behind her and saw something that made her smile fall.

A group of black birds circled over a sea turtle's nest. A baby wanted to come out, but every time he tried, a bird would swoop down and almost get him. He just wanted to get to the water.

Moana then turned back to her shell and noticed it was being pulled back into the water. What was she going to do?

Straining, Moana reached up and grabbed a palm frond. Holding it over the baby turtle's head, she guided him to the water, chasing away any birds that tried to get him.

Moana smiled as the turtle swam in the water, looking for his family. It made her happy. Just then, something impossible happened.

The water seemed to shimmer as an ethereal whispering filled the air.

The ocean then pulled back from the shore, right at Moana's feet. It made a path to the shell she lost.

Giggling, Moana walked up to the shell and picked it up. She saw another one in the water and reached for it. The ocean reached farther back, much to the shock of a fish, and continued the path.

Moana followed it, picking up more shells and dropping a few in the process.

Reaching the end, Moana saw the baby turtle swim by, following his mom or dad through the reef. But what happened next was impossible.

A mass of seawater like a tidal wave pulled out of the ocean and looked down at Moana. She tilted her head in confusion. The water followed that movement.

The ocean's "head" then leaned down toward Moana, who smiled as she reached up to touch it. She giggled as some water splashed on her face, causing her to drop the shells. Her smile just grew as the ocean gave her a funny hairdo.

Floating toward Moana was a green stone, pulsing with light like a heartbeat. Smiling, she reached inside and pulled it out.

She then noticed the stone was smooth, a spiral was etched in the center.

"Moana!" Tui's voice said, causing the ocean to look toward the village. In a hurry, the ocean fixed Moana's hair and carried her back to the beach on a piece of driftwood.

Upon landing, Moana lost her balance and dropped the stone.

Tui found his daughter trying to find something at the ocean's edge. Scared, he ran up to her.

"There you are, Moana," Tui said as he scooped her into his arms. "What are you doing? You scared me."

"What?" Moana asked. "I wanna's go back."

"I know, I know," Tui said as he set Moana down. "But you don't go out there. It's dangerous."

Moana whimpered as she looked back at the water. It didn't seem dangerous. It was... like a friend. It gave her that rock. Why?

"Moana, come on," Tui said as he grabbed his daughter's hand. "Let's go back to the village."
