Born to Be Alone

I was born to be alone
I exited my mother alone
Crying and wailing as she held me in her arms
She assured me, "I'll never leave you alone"

She looked on to me every step of the way
Every punishment, every reprimand, I kept to heart
Until I've grown to be like her
I thank her for not leaving me alone

I work hard to make her happy
To give back to her what she gave me
It's what she deserved
For raising me in this solitary world

But everyday, she grew weak
Until the day she couldn't speak
My body felt numb and cold
Knowing the soul won't hold

I held her hand as she passed on
As her final breath leaves her
Her lifeless face looked up the sky
To follow my father waiting above

At her wake, everyone wished their condolences
But their comforting words pass through me
I wish she had told me from the start
That I was born to be left alone
