Chapter 18: Hell

Ji Ningxin turned her head as a group of classmates staying temporarily in the neighboring villa waved at her from the cold wind.

She lowered the car windows slightly.

"Ji Ningxin, are you going to the nearby supermarket? Can we catch a ride with you?" It was Lu Tong who spoke up. Back in high school, he was their class monitor, and now, in the face of this disaster, it was clear he had been nominated as the leader by a few classmates.

Ji Ningxin had already anticipated this scene.

The group had been discussing their trip to the supermarket since last night. Without their own cars and the inconvenience of getting there, they were afraid of arriving too late and having to wait in long lines. Most importantly, they hadn't anticipated the sudden drop in temperature, and, astonishingly, there wasn't a single piece of warm clothing to be found in the villa they were assigned to.

When they first moved into the villa, they were quite comfortable. Though there were many people, the place was spacious, with underfloor heating, clean water, and gas. However, from the very first day, they noticed the villa was empty, completely different from the row houses where other evacuees were placed.

Typical household items such as snacks, drinks, and clothing were all missing, as if it were a model home.

Staying indoors was fine, but now the temperature outside was around minus seven or eight degrees Celsius, and their clothing was insufficient to withstand the cold. If they attempted to walk to the supermarket, they were likely to develop problems due to the cold. So, they thought of asking for a ride.

Some classmates suggested finding other residents and offering them some money in exchange for a ride.

But not everyone was willing. In times like these, both money and supplies were precious and limited. Moreover, a single car couldn't accommodate all of them, so they'd have to find two or three different households, which would be more costly.

Later on, one classmate mentioned the camper...

This camper wasn't expensive. Any random vehicle in the neighborhood was better than the camper, but there was no denying the fact that the camper was large. Even if it was just a Class C motorhome, it could easily seat all of them.

They could sit on the floor if necessary. It was still better than shivering and walking all the way there.

What's more, Ji Ningxin was their old classmate. Rather than making deals with strangers, it was better to ask someone they knew. At least she wouldn't take their money.

However, when it came to "asking someone they knew," Lu Tong was somewhat resistant. This had a backstory going back to their high school days.

For Ji Ningxin, though, that matter was long past. Furthermore, she had already decided that if they asked, she would give them a ride.

Lu Tingfeng remained silent. These were Ji Ningxin's classmates, so it should be her decision.

Ji Ningxin spoke, her tone not particularly warm. Lu Tong was her old classmate, and she was already prepared for this.

"I can give you a ride to the supermarket, but we will not drive you back, and we won't wait for you to load your supplies. We're just offering a ride along the way. The supermarket will definitely have warm clothing for sale, which should solve your cold protection problem. So, if you want to go to the supermarket next time, you'll have to rely on yourselves."

"Alright, thank you. As long as you can take us there today," Lu Tong was always on board with that plan. However, some of the classmates behind him had more ideas in mind, and nominating him to open this conversation had its own agenda.
