Eloy was part of a poor family. His family background showed the status of the people and it was obvious that they were uneducated. However, his father always regretted not being a literate person and he also lamented that there was no school in the village which would enable his children to live a better life. The villagers were still living under the misconception of slavery. They were still afraid of the police and to save themselves from their anger, they offered them all kinds of presents to them as bribe.

The politicians played with the emotions of the villagers knowing that they were uneducated and they would not rebel. For the family, going into the army was 1 step beyond their poverty. Eloy's father was extremely eager to educate his children therefore he could not accept his child to toil for the others like a slave. The father of Eloy was not fully accepting the preposition as he knew that Eloy would not have his education as he would be ordered around. The family did not pay heed to the advice for Eloy's father and went forward to look for votes. They felt preyed to the politicians who were blackmailing them.

Eloy was proud of his new status. He felt important in his uniform and he was happy. He was satisfied that he would no longer work in the soil where he was always dirty. Even though Eloy was happy his father was worried about his inner ignorance. He wanted him to learn so that he could get a better job.

In his blind love for Eulalia, he forgot about his parents and didn't care about their needs. Eloy didn't understand the messages or the technical words of his job. His lack of education made it difficult for him to work out the double meanings of the messages.

Finally Eloy understood the meaning of the eviction. He was troubled as he knew that his family was also in a very bad situation and they could also be driven out of their homes. Eloy was feeling guilty when he saw the fate of the peasants. He was feeling extremely ashamed of himself. He was also worried about the fate of his own parents

Eloy felt that he was part of a gang who imprisoned people without a justified reason. He felt he was not reacting properly. Eloy felt guilty when he saw the poverty in which the little boy and his mother were living. He was unable to recognize himself when he saw that situation.

Eloy was proud of his job and what he gained from it. He did not want to go back to his poor life. Eloy's duty was only to obey. He didn't have the right to protest against any injustice. He needed only to execute the orders received.

Eloy in certain ways regretted being a soldier but he could do nothing as he had accepted to be a soldier. He feared that his army might be attacked and he would die.

Eloy couldn't understand the real reason behind his job and orders be received due to its lack of education. All the soldiers were tired and wanted to go away from the tiring month and terrifying venture.

Eloy still remembered his past and he felt compassion for people like him that is peasants. Though he wanted to show bravery by imprisoning the men, he was unable to do so as he saw his helplessness.

Eloy was doing his job out of compassion as he was fed up of torturing innocent people. He wanted to be like the rebels but he feared the consequences. He also didn't want to go back into poverty

The fate of Eloy finally brought his death. In his huge to be helpful he lost his life. In the end, without education Eloy couldn't move away from the torturous life of soldiers. The lieutenant was able to end his hatred by hanging Eloy. Yet he didn't know that Eloy was not a danger as he himself was a confused person.

The choice to become a soldier brought atrocious consequences for Eloy. The impact of illiteracy brought him to his downfall as he couldn't understand the reasons of the attacks on the innocent people. Thus he could be of no help for his family as he became selfish and lost his values in the army.
