The hostel had placed all the students in their rooms and locked them in while investigators combed through the building, room by room. The hostel management was undoubtedly in hot water for losing a student. Son of the president. Son of a bitch.
Beomgyu observed Taehyun engrossed in whatever he was doing on his iPad. Taehyun eventually sensed Beomgyu's gaze, let out an irritated sigh, and asked, "What?"
Beomgyu shook his head, and Taehyun remarked, "You appear lost, even though you should be happy." Taehyun's cold demeanor was unmistakable. Beomgyu, feeling somewhat numb, inquired, "Happy about what?" He always had to be so clueless about everything, which irritated everyone around him.
Taehyun sighed once more and replied, "Your bully is gone... atleast for a while maybe" Beomgyu raised an eyebrow but refrained from mentioning that he wasn't just "Gone" but rather dead. Instead, he simply said, "Hm," to which Taehyun didn't offer any further response, returning to his iPad. Beomgyu then looked out of the window, pondering what Yeonjun might be doing at that moment.
Yeonjun, in contrast, found himself grappling with the unrelenting antics of his roommate and best friend, Soobin. "Could you please stop?" Yeonjun grumbled in irritation as Soobin playfully pinched him once again, disrupting his serious study session. For Yeonjun, his grades were of utmost importance, but this mischievous companion, like an energetic bunny, just wouldn't let him concentrate. Another pinch, and this time Yeonjun stood up, gesturing as if he were punching the air in frustration. Soobin burst into laughter.
"Come on, seriously, there's a missing kid in our hostel, and you're here studying," Soobin remarked. Yeonjun's expression briefly turned blank at this comment. He returned to his seat and calmly replied, "He wasn't of any use anyway."
"Seems like he's not entirely useless; we've got a day off from school because of him," Soobin melodramatically spun the situation into a theatrical performance. Yeonjun rolled his eyes and resumed his study session, completely ignoring Soobin's antics.
Yeonjun felt a sense of unease. What if they discovered Zico's body? No, he didn't even want to entertain that thought. He also suspected that Soobin was up to something. When he subtly tilted his head to warn him, Soobin suddenly exclaimed, "Okay, study, you old man!" Yeonjun let out a sigh of relief; now he could finally focus.
Maybe not.
Yeonjun could hear the sound of doors being unlocked. Seriously, what now? When he glanced back at the door, he saw a group of people entering – their hostel dean, homeroom teacher, and two unfamiliar men. Initially, he shot an irritated look their way, but then it hit him – were they investigators? He couldn't afford to panic right now.
"Answer their questions," Mr. Kim, their homeroom teacher, instructed Soobin, who was still standing with a grumpy expression. Soobin nodded and sat down on his bed. Yeonjun followed suit, sitting beside Soobin, while the two men positioned themselves in front of them. What was going to happen next?
"So, you must know why we're here, right?" one of the men asked, and both Yeonjun and Soobin nodded in response. Yeonjun muttered, "Yes."
One of the men took the seat where Yeonjun had been sitting before, and the other reassured them, "There's no need to be nervous; it's just a formality." However, these words didn't do much to ease Yeonjun's unease.
"So when was the last time you guys saw Zico?" the seated investigator inquired. Soobin promptly replied, "During tomorrow's class," although Yeonjun had seen him in the backyard last night. He decided to go with, "Last night, while taking attendance before curfew time." Both of them fell silent until the standing investigator remarked, "Ah, you're the student representative as well," to which Yeonjun nodded.
The seated investigator then asked, "Did he ever show any signs of running away?" Their gaze was fixed on Yeonjun, who responded with a firm "No."
The standing investigator continued, "Any other information that can help us?" Soobin and Yeonjun exchanged a brief glance before Yeonjun hesitated, saying, "Well... he has always been a troublemaker." Their homeroom teacher chimed in, "I can vouch for that," and the dean added, "If he wasn't the president's son, I would have sent him back already."
With a nod, the investigators left, unlocking their room as they departed.
Soobin looked over Yeonjun's flushed face and hugged him so suddenly that they ended up on the floor. "Fuck," Yeonjun hissed.
"You sure?" Soobin teased as they both stood up.
"Let me fucking study" Yeonjun warned.
Soobin pouted and remarked, "Don't tell me you're having sex with books."
Yeonjun turned to him with a disgusted expression and retorted, "Gross."
Yeonjun couldn't help but wonder how Beomgyu would respond to the investigators. He imagined Beomgyu might stutter and utter odd statements that could raise doubts. If that happened, it wouldn't just be Beomgyu facing consequences. Yeonjun felt a pang of anxiety. Why had he decided to take that round last night?
