I organized this dinner all afternoon, I called a Michelin-starred chef and my cleaning lady to clean everything and prepare the table. I changed into my most expensive black suit and my beard is freshly shaved. Tonight... Tonight I'm going to tell Selena that I've dumped Yolanda, I'm free but now she's not free with her boyfriend as ridiculous as the previous one... Josh.
I hope to get her back tonight, her boyfriend is a minor obstacle in my way. I've spent this last year proving to Selena that I'm sorry for my past actions, that I'm a good father and I would remain a good husband to her, and that she and our daughter could get a family back together. I'm going to open up even though I still know how or what I'm going to say to her but I'm going to do it. Before I leave the living room to go back to work since they seem late, the doorbell rings, I open the front door to face Selena and Josh. Selena... gorgeous and sexy in her black dress that reveals her curves and Josh is still underdressed with a simple shirt and jeans and sneakers, I roll my eyes just at the image of the two, he didn't deserve her.
"Good evening, how was the traffic?" I ask Selena because her stupid boyfriend had lost his license. She gives me a quick hug and replies that it wasn't so bad and I shake Josh's hand. We sit at the table, I serve them wine and sit down facing Selena while Josh sits next to her. During the entire dinner, she is distant from me, avoids my gaze, and responds quickly. She's acting weird and I don't know why because, in the months that went by we became cordial again, even more than cordial, we were chatting and laughing with each other so why is she so distant tonight?
"I'm going to give my mom a call to see how the girls are doing, so you can talk to her about you know what." Josh gets up and walks out of the house to check on the girls. Curiously, I give Selena's hand a little tap and point her to the balcony so that we can talk in peace. She nods and we both get up to sit on the balcony.
She stares into space, always avoids my gaze and we remain in an uncomfortable silence and I clear my throat to get her attention." I broke up with Yolanda, there won't be an engagement or a wedding, actually... It's been months since I finished everything with her but I wanted to wait until this dinner to tell you because...Selena, I love you and I don't want to stay with someone if it's just to forget about you, to accept the idea that we're not together anymore..."
Tears flowed from her eyes as soon as I started to speak and seeing her so fragile breaks my heart... I take her in my arms and she bursts into tears." I know our story is complicated and I know it's because of me but Selena please forgive me and take me back... I love you and I want you and no one else.... I'll beg you on my knees all my life if that's what you want..."I stroke her hair until she calms down and she loosens herself from my arms.
"I can't..." Her red eyes finally look me in the eye and she reaches into her bag to place papers in my hand" Josh proposed to me and I said yes, he and I are engaged... and... And despite our history... I don't want to miss my chance to get what I've always wanted and that with someone else, I want to try to be happy with him..." I feel my whole world falling apart and just now she takes her engagement ring out of her bag and places it on her finger, the same finger where I put rings myself years ago.
And right there, I look at the papers in my hands and these are the signed and complete divorce papers... And I who thought I still had a chance with her, now all my dreams of family and remarriage are destroyed.
She places her hand on one of my cheeks and kisses the other cheek, still with red eyes and on the verge of bursting into tears, "I'm going to wait for you, Selena, even if it means ending my life alone..." I whisper to her "Please for yourself, don't..."She gives me one last sad smile before leaving my house...
Voilà, my first story is finally over!! I know many would like Selena and Dante to end up together but not everything ends the way you want it to and a sad ending was more interesting for me.
