The world didn't end with a bang, or even a whisper. It ended with a kiss that didn't belong to him.

Y/N stood frozen in the dim glow of the hallway lights, the roar of Friday night chatter muffled by the blood rushing in his ears. His hand gripped the frame of the classroom door so tightly his knuckles turned white. Inside, just a few feet away, his girlfriend, Emily Hartman, the girl he'd dated for almost two years, the girl who swore she loved him, was kissing another guy.

It wasn't a mistake. It wasn't a misunderstanding. Their hands tangled together with a familiarity that said this wasn't the first time.

Y/N's heart cracked in his chest like glass under pressure.

He wanted to storm in. He wanted to yell, to demand why. But his throat locked, and no words came. For all the fights they'd had, all the promises exchanged under the stars, all the moments he thought were real, this was how it ended?

Emily: Y/N?

Emily's voice broke through the haze, high-pitched and guilty. She tore herself away from the guy, her eyes wide.

Emily: I... it's not what it looks like.

Not what it looks like. The oldest lie in the book.

The guy, some varsity football player whose name Y/N couldn't even remember, smirked like he'd won something. Like Y/N was just the joke before the real prize.

Y/N's body moved before his brain could catch up. He turned on his heel, shoving through the crowded hall, ignoring the whispers that chased him.

Coward.

Idiot.

Heartbroken fool.

By the time he reached the parking lot, the night air slapped him awake. His chest heaved, but no tears came. Not yet.

He'd given Emily everything, his time, his trust, his heart. And in return, she'd given him betrayal.

Y/N didn't remember much of the drive home. Just the blur of headlights and the taste of bitterness in his mouth. By the time he reached his house, he felt hollow. His mom called from the kitchen, asking about his night, but he muttered something about homework and shut himself in his room.

Hours passed. The house grew quiet. Still, he lay awake, staring at the cracks in his ceiling, replaying the moment over and over.

Her lips on someone else's.

Her hands pulling him close.

Her eyes meeting Y/N's, not with love, but with guilt.

That was what killed him the most.

He stared at the ceiling until it blurred, his thoughts spinning.

Why wasn't he enough?
When had he stopped being enough?
And why hadn't she told him?

The tears came then, sharp and merciless. He buried his face in his pillow, fists trembling against the mattress. Every memory replayed itself like a cruel film reel, the first time they held hands, the nights spent talking until sunrise, the promises of forever.

Forever had lasted less than two years.

He threw his phone onto the floor, the screen lighting up with notifications he didn't want to read. Emily's name glared back at him, and each vibration felt like a knife twisting deeper.

Apologies. Excuses. Lies.

He didn't need them.

At some point exhaustion dragged him into sleep, his face sticky with tears.

Saturday passed in a haze. Y/N avoided his parents, muttering something about being sick. They left him alone, though his mom kept knocking with food he didn't touch. His room became a cave, lit only by the glow of his laptop screen as he mindlessly scrolled through social media. Every post, every picture, seemed to mock him.

And of course, Emily was there too. Smiling. Laughing. Acting as if nothing had happened.

The sight made his stomach twist. He shut the laptop with a snap and stared at his reflection in the darkened screen. He looked like hell. Puffy eyes. Hollow cheeks. A boy chewed up and spit out.

By Sunday night, the anger began to harden into something steadier. If she wanted to move on, fine. He'd survive. He had to.

But the sting lingered like an open wound.

By morning, the ache in his chest had dulled into something heavier, sharper. Not sadness. Not yet. Just anger.

He dragged himself to school, ignoring the pit in his stomach. The halls felt louder than usual, whispers spreading like wildfire. Word had gotten out. It always did.

"Did you hear?"
"She dumped him for Jake?"
"Brutal."

Y/N kept his head down, pushing through the sea of voices. Every glance felt like a spotlight. Every laugh felt like it was aimed at him.

At lunch, he sat alone. His friends had tried to comfort him earlier, but their words slid right off. What could they say? That he'd be fine? That he'd get over her?

They didn't understand. Emily wasn't just his girlfriend. She was his future... or so he thought. Now that future was ash.

He picked at his food, appetite gone. His phone buzzed again with her name, but he shoved it back into his pocket. He refused to read another lie.

When the final bell rang, he bolted from the building, desperate for air.

That was when it happened.

As he turned the corner by the east entrance, he collided hard with someone. His books scattered across the pavement, papers fluttering in the breeze.

???: Watch where you're going.

A sharp voice snapped.

Y/N blinked, stunned. Standing before him was a girl he'd never seen before, or maybe he had, but never this close. She was striking, with dark hair that shimmered under the sunlight, eyes sharp as glass, and a posture that radiated confidence.

Her clothes weren't school-issued or casual. They were sleek, tailored, like she'd stepped out of a different world entirely.

Y/N: Sorry.

Y/N muttered, kneeling to grab his books.

The girl didn't kneel. She just watched, arms crossed, as if waiting for him to finish groveling.

???: You're Y/N, right?

She asked, her voice cool but curious.

He frowned, clutching his books.

Y/N: Yeah. Do I... know you?

She tilted her head slightly, a faint smirk tugging at her lips.

???: Not yet. But I know you.

Her words sent a shiver down his spine.

Before he could respond, a black luxury car pulled up to the curb. The driver, dressed in a suit, stepped out and opened the back door.

The girl glanced at Y/N once more, something unreadable in her gaze, then slid into the car without another word. The door shut, and just like that, she was gone.

Y/N stood frozen, his heart racing for reasons he couldn't explain.

Who was she?

That night, he sat at his desk, pretending to study but replaying the encounter in his head. He didn't know her name, but her face wouldn't leave his mind. The way she looked at him, not with pity, not with disdain, but like she knew something about him he didn't.

He shook his head, trying to focus on his textbook. What did it matter? She was probably just some rich girl passing through.

And yet... something told him this wasn't the last time their paths would cross.

For the first time since Emily's betrayal, Y/N's chest didn't feel quite so hollow.

It felt... curious. Alive.

He didn't know it yet, but this was the moment everything changed.
