Chapter two:

It had been a year since the legalization of vampires, and it was only now that all the laws had been laid down, and our position in society as hunters had cleared up.

The area of Minnesota was given to me, my new apartment close to Minnesota City. Though it wasn’t my first choice, it worked for me. It was close to Darryl’s business, so at least I was close to an arms and information dealer.

I still wasn’t sure if my badge was an improvement or not. The vampires I was send out to kill, had all done something wrong. Actually I was more often called in after a crime scene investigation, ( where they knew which vampire did it, but nothing more) than because some stupid reason, like a vampire cheating on his girlfriend.

So in that sense it was a good thing, I got to kill those that really mattered. But I also felt like a part of my freedom had been taken away. I couldn’t just do anything anymore, I had to be more responsible, more controlled or I would lose my job.

If I went after a vamp I didn’t have a warrant for but because of a personal vendetta or something like that, than I would be prosecuted.  It meant that I couldn’t just threaten vamps that got in my way.  It was a damn shame.

My apartment wasn’t something special, and for the money I paid for it I hadn’t expected anything else. I did get paid to be a hunter, but it wasn’t much. Most of the money I spend was stolen from the dead undead. They didn’t need it anymore anyway.

I was surprised to find I had already two warrants waiting for me, and a letter.

I viewed over the warrant rather quick, both were easy morgue jobs, where the vampire had already been captured and I only had to put a stake through its heart.

That was one of the easiest way to kill a vamp. Take out its heart, or take off the head. For a vampire over two-hundred years you needed to do both, or they wouldn’t be dead.

Fire alone would work to for a lot of vamps, but not if the vamp was powerful and old enough, than you would want to take out the heart and head.

The letter looked fancy and expensive. I had no idea who it would be coming from, seeing as I didn’t know anyone that was rich.

The envelope was addressed to no one, only this address was written on it with elegant letters.

No longer able to obtain my curiosity I opened it.

Dear Vampire Hunter,

Word has gotten to my Master that today you would be arriving in the City of Minnesota. Since you will be active in his territory, this is a matter not taken lightly. He wishes to meet with you, so you can discuss business. He will agree to meet you in a place of your choosing and allows you to wear your weaponry. He will take two bodyguards with him for his protection. We hope to hear from you soon,

Yours sincerely,

Mareille, assistant of the City’s Master.

I was speechless. Dumbfounded even. It was not something that happened often.

Did they really think I’d be that stupid. That I would just meet with a vamp powerful enough to rule a city. Vampires alone were a thing to be feared, but a master vampire was a force best not to provoke. I’d never taken on a master vampire, and it was part of the reason I was still alive.

From the way the letter was written, I’d say that they didn’t know who I was, yet, just that I was coming today. Maybe I should take advantage of that and find another place to stay.

I put that thought away, it would be too much like running, something I didn’t do, and I had a feeling that they’d be able to find me again. And again and again.
