"Hayley, come on! It's not what it looks like!"
Hayley ignored Chad's shouts as she made her way towards her car, nothing in her hand but her phone and keys. She couldn't believe it. Couldn't even think straight.
Ten years.
Ten years.
And what to show for it? Another woman in her bed? With her husband.
Nothing was making sense.
"Hayley, can't we just talk about this? Baby, please." Chad begged, right on her heals as she finally got to the car and instantly got in.
She slammed the door behind herself quickly, locking the doors and glaring at him through her teary eyes.
"Fuck you." Was all she told him, wanting her voice to come out strong and steady, but instead it was quiet, so quiet she was sure he wouldn't be able to hear her. With the way her words shook, she was glad he couldn't.
When he began to try and open the door, she started the car, instantly going into reverse as he continued, hitting the window every once in a while.
She drove in silence for a while, unsure where to go or what to do except cry. It felt like her whole world was crumbling down. Nothing made sense anymore and she was questioning everything.
Every kiss they'd shared, every I love you. How much of it had been a lie? If it was ever real, when did it stop? All those nights Chad said he had to work late, the trips out of town for work?
She had to leave for tour in two weeks. If she hadn't walked in on them, would that woman be there all the time? Sleeping in her bed? With her husband?
Hayley felt like she was going to puke, but just as she was about to pull the car over to a random spot on the road, she realized she was on Taylors street.
She let out a shaky sigh of relief, thankful for her subconscious leading her here. Of course going to Taylor's house would make sense. He was her best friend.
Hayley pulls into his driveway, seeing his car isn't there, but hoping that just means he parked in the garage today. She turns off the car, but is unable to get out.
The minute her body isn't at least semi-focused on the driving, she's breaking down again. She covers her face with her hands as the sobs wrack throughout her body, digging her nails ever so slightly into her hairline, because god she just needs to squeeze something. Or hit something.
She isn't sure how long she sits there, but it's getting too hot and she can barely breathe. Between the hyperventilating and the car being off in the summer heat, she's uncomfortable, adding more to her frustration.
A knock sounds on her car window, and she bolts up, feeling like she's jumped out of her skin. She's not sure why she's expecting Chad to be there, begging again for her forgiveness.
The moment her eyes lock with Taylors, he's tugging on the door handle to get to her, having not seen her this torn up in who knows how long.
"Hayley, open up," he asks softly, but there's an urgency in his eyes.
She feels herself move, feels herself click the unlock button, watches as the car door opens and seconds later Taylor is moving her hair out of her face, away from her neck, basically peeling it off of her skin that was sticky with sweat.
"What happened?" He asks quietly, his hand still hovering over her neck, only making contact every once in a while due to her shaking and uneven breaths.
Hayley shakes her head, lips quivering as she leans into him, wrapping her arms around his neck and holding on just a little too tight. He doesn't say anything though, just wraps his arms around her back and lets her bury her head in his chest.
They sit there for a few minutes, and Hayley uses Taylor to try and ground herself. Focuses on his breathing to try and match hers. Listens to the soft thump-thump-thump of his heartbeat and feels her own beating in her chest. Makes herself focus on the places their skin is touching, arm to neck, arm to arm, chin to head.
"Let's go inside, it's hot and you look like you're gonna be sick from it." he eventually suggests, lightly peeling her off of him. The moment she loses contact with him she wants to break down crying again because all she really wants right now is someone to hold her. She wants to crawl inside his skin and never have to do anything else ever again.
When she doesn't move, Taylor is quick to grab her hands, pulling her out of the muggy car. Setting his hand on her lower back as he guides her towards the house and she's so grateful he seems to realize she needs some sort of contact right now. She's so grateful he knows her.
When she sits down on the couch, he ducks out of the room for a moment, returning quickly with a glass of water which she instantly declines. After setting it down on the table, he goes back over to her, kneeling down in front of her.
"What happened?" He tries again, seeing as she's calmer now.
Hayley bites her lip, trying to get it to stop shaking as tears well back in her eyes again. She goes to say it, just rip the bandaid off and get it over with, but when she opens her mouth nothing comes out, so instead she shakes her head and clamps it shut again.
His hands feel cold when they land on her own.
He doesn't ask again, which she's beyond grateful for. Instead, the two just sit in silence, Hayley staring at their hands, Taylor staring at her.
Eventually, she feels like she can say it, so she does.
"Chad is cheating on me." Her voice comes out coarse and shaky.
She expects Taylor to be... Well, Taylor. Give her a hug, try to reassure her even though it's clear he doesn't know what to say. Instead, he stands up, and Hayley's hands follow him for a moment as he pulls his own away.
"I'm gonna fucking kill him." Taylor decides, and Hayley isn't really sure she's ever seen him this angry.
She doesn't know how to react, just shakes her head, looking up at him and she's sure if she had the energy she'd be crying again.
He paces a little, looking jumpy and shaking with anger. Hayley isn't quite sure what to say or do, she doesn't have the energy to even think about it all that much. So instead, she falls back on the couch, letting her eyes land on the floor.
"Can we just put on a movie or something?" Hayley finds herself asking, pulling her hands down her face, feeling the temporary indents her fingers leave on her skin.
Taylor freezes for a moment, his anger seeming to melt away as he looks at her, and is quick to agree. He's still angry, she can tell. But she also knows Taylor, knows he'd do just about anything she asks, just as she would for him.
He sits beside her on the couch and she curls into him, throwing her legs over one of his as he wraps an arm around her, personal space forgotten somewhere between middle school lunch rooms and highschool parties all those years ago.
He puts on a movie like she asks, something with no substance and a shitty plot so neither of them would have to focus all that much.
If he notices her crying again 5 minutes in, he doesn't say anything. Just twirls the ends of her hair between the pads of his fingers and rests his head on top of hers.
