It was the next morning. Max found it hard to sleep due to last nights terrible events, which is why she woke up late this morning. Mike wasn't in the room and she couldn't hear anyone talking. She got out of bed and opened Mikes bedroom door cautiously, making sure his parents weren't there. She walked down the steps tiptoeing, trying to hear if anyone was home. She didn't want Karen to see her, or Ted but mostly Karen. Max was sure she could come up with a Good excuse that Ted would fall for if she bumped into him but Karen wasn't that gullible. When she got to the living room, she found Mike sitting there watching tv.
"Hey you're up, I didn't want to wake you" the boy spoke when he noticed her standing in the door way.
"Yeah, Uh where is everyone?" She asked
"My parents are at work and Holly's at daycare"
"And Nancy?"
"She's out with Jonathan. So we're on are own" he stated. Max was kind of excited, she finally got to spend time with Mike. "which means" he continued as he stood up and walked closer to Max. " We need to cook for ourselves. Which I've never done. So I'm hoping you have"
"Well I've cooked for my self a few times when I've been home alone. Which happens a lot actually, When my mums working and Neil's out drunk somewhere." She looked down for a second "but I'm no professional"
"Well you're already better than me"
"Why is he acting so normal? Why is he acting like nothing happened?"Max thought
he looked at his watch. "It's twelve so we might as well just skip breakfast and make lunch"
"Mike"
He stopped walking to the kitchen and looked at Max
"Why are you acting like nothing happened?"
"What do you mean?"
"Yesterday. You're acting like nothing happened, you're acting so calm"
"Last time I asked you if you wanted to talk about it you said no so I thought... I thought I shouldn't mention it again" he said softly.
There was that silence again.
"Does she want to talk about it?" No, probably not"Mike thought
Mike opens the fridge. "Well we have chicken." He continued the conversation as normal.
"Is that it?" Max asked.
"Yeah..."
"Well then I guess we are having chicken"
Minuets passed and they had got the chicken in the pan successfully. Mike also found some potato's which they put to boil.
"We did it! And a bonus, the house isn't on fire" Mike lifts his hand up for a high five and Max does so while laughing at his comment. They are once again interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Shit hide! Hide!"
Max hides behind the wall in the kitchen as Mike runs to the door to open it.
"Hey Mike" Lucas was standing at the door.
"Oh hi, Lucas now's not a good time"
" I really need to talk to someone Mike, please" he pleaded.
Mike sighed "okay, come in"
"Thanks" Lucas walked in and sat on the couch "it's about Max"
Max's heard her name and started to pay more attention
"I don't know what to do"
"What do you mean?"
"Things have been awkward and I want to talk to her again. To be honest I want to get back together"
"You can't if she doesn't want to Lucas"
"I know I know but.. what do you think I should do?"
"I think you should just give her space you know? And when she's ready then you guys can be friends again"
"I don't want to be just friends Mike" he said as he emphasised the just
"Lucas you just have to get over her"
"Why are you giving me such bad advice?"
Mike stayed silent he didn't know what to say
"Why do I care so much that Lucas wants to get back together with Max?"
"Do you have coke?" Lucas asked as he stood up and headed to the kitchen
"Uh Lucas don't!"
Luckily, Max heard him coming and moved round the other side. Lucas just missed her. He opened the fridge and took a can "Bro? You don't have new coke?"
"No"
"Just watch by the end of the summer I'll convince you it's better" Lucas said. He then spotted the chicken. "Is that for you?"
'Y-yeah!"
"That's a lot of chicken for one person man"
"Uh yeah I skipped breakfast so I was hungry"
Lucas raised and eyebrow at him " are you okay you're kinda sweating"
"Yeah bro it's just hot. You know how hot the summer sun can get"
"Yeah?... Are you sure you're okay"
"Hey look now really isn't a good time can we talk about this another time" Mike said as he put one hand on Lucas' back leading him towards the door
"Oh okay"
"Sorry man"
"No don't worry about it"
Mike gave Lucas a smile and he gave a small one back before he left
Mike sighed after he shut the door. He turned around to find Max right behind him
"Ah Jesus!"
"Great job Mike I'm sure he didn't Suspect a thing" She spoke in a sarcastic tone
"I was nervous okay?"
"Nervous about what?"
"About him seeing you here"
"Why? I mean hiding me from your parents I can understand, they probably wouldn't let me stay but why from our friends?"
"Because they would find it weird! I mean you Max Mayfield are staying here, at MY house! I hate you, you hate me!" Mike was talking fast
"I don't hate you Mike"
"Exactly! Don't you think it's weird how fast we went from hating each other to not"
"What are you getting at, Mike?"
Mike sighed before he pulled Max in for a kiss. Her eyes widened before she closed them and kissed back. The light touch of his lips sent shivers down her spine. The kiss was long. It felt like an eternity but it felt so right. It eventually stopped. Mike leaned his forehead on to Maxes as he whispered "that's why I was scared for him to find you."
Max smiled and pulled Mike in for another kiss. She pulled his body tight against hers, pushing her lips against his urgently. The front door slammed opened and they both quickly pulled away from each other, but it was too late they had been spotted.
"Nancy?" Mikes jaw dropped Nancys eyes widened in disbelief.
"I'm sorry. Apparently I've opened a door which leads to another dimension where you two like each other" she's nervously laughed and shut the front door.
Mike and Max went back to face each other . "I told you they would find it weird" he spoke as he looked at her. They both laughed not being able to contain it.
It was later that evening and the Wheelers were having dinner. Max was upstairs still hiding from Mikes parents. Nancy kept glancing over to Mike at the dinner table, she was still astonished from what she had seen earlier that day.
"Is everything okay?" Karen asked as she could tell there was some tension
"Everything is great" Nancy replied with a fake smile.
Ted could care less about what was going on. He just ate his food while enjoying his daydream. Nancy and Mike were the first two to finish eating their dinner.
"Hey Mike, why don't you come help me wash these plates" Nancy said while looking at him.
"It's just two plates can't you do it yourself?"
Nancy widened her eyes at Mike, practically telling him to get his ass up and walk into the kitchen, he rolled his eyes but took the hint and followed her. Nancy practically threw the plates into the sink "jeez!" Mike said
"So are we just not going to talk about today?
"Nancy what's the big deal?"
"Max!? Out of every other girl it has to be Max? Mike! What about El!? And Lucas!? Have you not thought about them. You're cheating on El with Lucas' ex"
"Relax I'm not cheating me and El broke up the other day."
"You guys broke up?"
"Yeah we decided we would be better off as friends. And yes I have thought about them and I do feel a bit guilty"
"Look Mike I'm not telling you what to do but I don't want you or anyone to get hurt" she advised
"I know"
"Just be careful with what you do next okay?"
"Okay I will."
Mike was already having second thoughts about the kiss. Not because he didn't like it but because he felt guilty.
It was the next day and once again Mike had woken up before Max. He didn't sleep well last night due to all the guilt he was feeling. Why was he feeling like this?
Both couples had broken up so it's not like they were cheating. Maybe because he knew El still had feelings for him and Lucas still had feelings for Max.
"Morning." Max had woken up. She sat up in bed stretching. She had the biggest smile on her face from yesterday's kiss. This was the first time she's been happy in a long time.
"Hey.." Mike sat down at the end of the bed. He wanted to talk to her. Max gently placed her hand on Mike's cheek. Her hand was soft and as much as Mike liked it, he gently took her hand and lowered it. A confused expression appeared on Maxes face.
"Max listen." He took a deep breath before he continued "I like you. I like you a lot"
Max was listening while leaning on her hand, gazing into Mikes eyes thinking about how cute he was being.
"But" he spoke
But. Of course there's a but she thought.
"But what?" Max was concerned.
"I don't think this is right"
"What? Mike what are you talking about?"
Mike could hear the worry in her voice.
"This...us" he said while making a hand gesture towards both of them.
"What do you mean?" She questioned now starting to feel more nervous about what he was going to say.
"You know what I mean..." he whispered softly, almost as if he didn't want to explain to her. A look of worry appeared on her face
"Max... your my best friends ex and I'm your best friends ex. It feels wrong"
"But it also feels right" she added "Mike I've thought about it too but we can't just ignore how we feel towards each other"
"I know I know." He shook his head "why is this so complicated?"
She took his hand into hers "Mike.."
"Max.. I think we should just call it off before it's too late. This isn't going to work... I'm sorry" the tall boy got up and left, Letting go for her hand which slipped and hit the bed.
Max threw herself back onto the pillow sighing. She laid there and looked at the ceiling.
