Even late in the night, the streets of New York were loud and crowded. The lights were bright and there were so many kinds of people, from strange looking men smoking and tossing their cigarettes out to the pavement to loud teenage girls out partying- which i thought was completely stupid why would you go out as a woman in the streets to get drunk in the world we live in today?. Then again i was a lonely little girl walking in the streets of New York.
I continued to make my way around the streets until I finally reached the bus station.I tried not to draw attention as i entered the station, i already looked lost and i didn't want a police officer to come and ask me where my parents were, he would obliviously notice i was running away.I knew my foster parents wouldn't come looking for me, i mean at some point they would, but they weren't gonna be calling every police station to look for me, they didn't care that much about me to be bothered this late.Maybe they were asleep and didn't even noticed i left, so i thought i was safe for now as long as i didn't stand out in the crowd, which was sort of a difficult task, i had long red hair and a face full of freckles, if someone was looking for me i would be easy to spot.
I looked around to find the desk where i could buy my ticket while the sea of people flew right in front of me. When i finally located the desk i made my way through the crowd to reach it. I started counting my money worried that it might not be enough, when i reached the desk i looked up and saw an old lady with a weird expression on her face, she was looking at me in a suspicious way like i had done something wrong, did she thought there was something wrong with me? Did she knew i was running away? My thoughts were interrupted by a deep but weirdly squeaky voice -"How many tickets?" I looked up again at the old lady, she still had that weird expression on her face but i tried to act as natural as possible -"Uh-uhh just one please" i said nervous, god that wasn't natural at all , the woman raised her eyebrow and looked directly at me.
"Just you?" She said with an accusatory tone
"Yep just me"
She let out a deep sigh "alright here's your ticket, that'll be 15 dollars"
I was relieved that i had enough money, i handed her the 15 bucks thanked her and made my way to the platform. The bus was already full when i stepped in, a lady was kind enough to move her belongings and free a seat for me, she smiled at me and i did the same as i settled in the seat.
"You all alone?" the kind lady asked
"Yeah I am"
"Aren't you a little young to be traveling on your own? She asked playfully
"Well I-I uh"
"You aren't running away are you?
My heart started beating faster, was i that obvious? .It took a moment to make up a story but i finally answered her "No! Of course im not running away! Im just um-visiting my grandmother in Long Island , she is really sick and my mom wants me to spend some time with her this summer" i can't believe i just came up with that. But lucky for me she believed it.
"Oh that's lovely" she replied
"Oh yeah im excited to spend time with her"
"Well i hope you have a great time" she said with a smile on her face
The kind lady reached her bag and took out a book, i tried to read the tittle but the distance and the dyslexia weren't playing on my favor.
I searched the pocket of my jacket and took the letter my grandmother wrote for me before she passed. She told that i should read it the moment i felt was the right time.I had read it a thousand times by now but i never got tired of reading it again and again, something about seeing her hand writing brought peace to the caos my mind had been for the past weeks.I unfolded the paper and started reading
Dear Augustine
I know life hasn't been kind to you but i also know that you are strong.
Therefore you are strong enough to learn the truth, you deserve to.
You are special, you are not normal.I know this is going to sound like
a joke or maybe even a dream.Your real mother is not who you think
she is, she didn't abandon you.She is a goddess, you are a demigod
That's why you have always been so unique and different. You shall
find more answers at Camp Half-Blood, is a place for people like you.
Im so sorry that you had to find out this way but i couldn't tell, i hope
you understand. I love you my dear, i hope you can forgive me and
Your father.
Love Grandma
It wasn't a very detailed letter if you ask me but i know she wrote with all her heart on it.It was sad that she thought i would be mad at her, i could never be mad at her, she was the only person that was always there for me and she truly got me, but i was mad at how she left things. How could she have only left a little letter and a map for a 13 year old to discover the truth about who she really is.She was right in one thing, it did feel like a dream and i always used to believed everything my grandmother told but come on a demigod? It was so unreal, but i needed to learn the truth even if in would end up in a disappointment.Either way i was determined to find Camp Half-Blood and my answers.
I folded the letter again and kept it in my pocket. I started to think about what could i possibly find at Camp Half-Blood.Then it hit me, how could i find the camp? The map pointed an entrance somewhere in Montauk.I wasn't smart , how was i supposed to read a map? I inspected the paper looking for something to help me out, i turned the paper and saw the handwriting of my dear grandmother 'trust in your instincts'
I don't know how that was supposed to help but it did bring me a certain sense of serenity.Everything will be ok i thought to myself.
The bus slowed down and I glanced at to the front to see which stop we were heading, fortunately it was mine, turns out it wasn't a long way to Camp Half-Blood.I grabbed my stuff and got out of the bus as soon as it stopped. It was chilly outside and the only noise around was the bus fading away and the sing of the crickets much different than in the city.I stared at the beauty of the night sky before i reached out to my pocket and took at the map to try and figure out where should i head to.
I stared at the map the map for a few minutes but it was pointless, i had no idea where to go. I had no option than to follow my instincts i guess, i looked around and saw some beautiful pines, there were similar to the ones in the picture of the map, without any sense direction i started walking through the dark pine forest.
I walked for about two hours, i was getting tired and scared.I chose to lie down next to a beautiful and tall pine tree, my eyelids became heavy and i tried my best not to fall asleep but obliviously i failed and fell in a heavy dream.
I was woken up by the voice of a young woman, my eyes were closed but i could hear her calling at me, the voice started to become clearer and clearer, i opened my eyes and looking down at me was a blonde girl with gray eyes.My vision was blurry but i slowly started to adjust to the light of the bright morning. The girl helped me sit down and shook down the leaves that were up in my hair "Are you ok?" She asked with a soft voice.
"Yes im fine, thank you" i responded
"What are you doing around here?"
"Oh im just looking for some camp" i mumbled
"Camp Half-Blood?" She asked surprised
"Yes! Do you know where it is?
She ignored my question "Who are you?" She asked concerned
"I'm Augustine, who are you?"
"Im Annabeth, Annabeth Chase"
YEP THAT'S IT, FOR NOW :)
