I looked to her
As she waved goodbye
She was resigned to her fate
I was afraid of mine
I didn't want her to go
Who was I without her?
I did not know.
She was clumsy at times
Could be selfish and cruel
I didn't always love her
It took time to understand her
To not ridicule and degrade
The more I love her
I see the cruelty fade
She is no longer clumsy and unsure
She is changing
She is growing
I step forward with a sureness
I've never displayed
With fear in my eyes
And hope in my heart
I turn back
To thank her for carrying me this far
She is not angry
She does not weep
She looks to me
With a gentleness she's never shown
She is happy
Happy to be saying goodbye
