[3] Being helpful isn't enough

Before I could say anything I felt the ground shaking and after I turned around I saw a lots of people singing about how they love the Thneeds and how everybody needs a Thneed. I didn't know why, but I didn't care!

"Oh! That is what you wanted to tell me. You actually got them to-" I wasn't able to hear her anymore because I was sorrounded by so many people handing me money.

Quickly I took my Telephone to call my mom "I did it mom! You have to come, quick!"

And it actually didn't last long till they were here. I was so happy. "Ohh, we knew you would do it" my mom said proud "But... You always said I wouldn't make it at all." I was kind of confused why she changed her mind so fast. "Don't be silly, that was just as encouragement" - "Thanks that you clarify that, because it hurt my feeling for a very looong time"

As I was talking to them I didn't even notice how y/n was standing beside me, wondering what this is all about.
"Uhm, Onceler? We need to-" befor she could even finish my mom went to her.

"Ohh, who are you? A silly friend of my son?" Her face looked like she was a weird distraction. I wasn't pleased. "Mom, please stop. She's just helping me. So don't worry"

I got a smile as reaction and they started to "build" their house. (If you wantched the movie, you know what I mean).

Y/n Pov:

It seemed like there was diffent air when they arrived. Not even after they started working, the Lorax was coming, mad.

"What is this all about? Since when did I allowed you all to stay?" I just saw how the Onceler and Lorax argued a bit, but I didn't understand every word.

Somehow I had the feeling this wouldn't end well. His family gave me certain vibes I felt befor.

After the Lorax left again they started working. Onceler wanted me to help him strucure his industry while the others would pick up the material like I did.

"It looks perfect, doesn't it? I'm so proud of myself" I simply nodded and then looked away. "What's the madder? Since my family is here you're all strange"

I couldn't bring myself to tell him my problem. Maybe I was just over thinking stuff. "Don't worry, it's nothing, really" - "If you say so, y/n. You know that you can tell me if you're bothered" he said with a smile.

That gave me the courage to actually tell him, but his mother started to interrupt us. "Oncie, we got a little problem. We can't get the material fast enough. I know you and your little friend don't want to.. But we could still chop down some trees, right?"

Onceler gave me a weird look, like if he asked me for permission to actually chop down some trees. I shaked my head immediately and got a frown from his mother as a reaction. "You'll allow us, right Oncie?"

Did she really just ignore my awnser?! The Onceler thought, he actually thought about it and turned to me "It would be just some trees. You won't even see it"

I crossed my arms. This should tell him not to do it. But I saw how the Onceler was stressed. He had a hard time deciding. So I give in "Listen, maybe you shouldn't do what we what, but what you want. Think about what's more important." I said as calmly as possible.

He thought for a moment. "I think.. It wouldn't hurt to chop down some trees, I mean after we got enough money we could still plant trees and then just take the material like before, you know?"

He was carful with his words, to maybe satisfy both sides. I mean he did satisfy his mothers side and without even letting me awnser to that she just gave his brothers the permission to chop down some trees and left.

"Onceler.. Please, I hope you know what your doing and that you ceep your promise. I trust you, okay?" I said, thinking that I couldn't do more than talk to him. He nodded and pat my head "Don't worry, I'll defently will keep it"

"Actually... About earlier, when you said that I could tell you everything" - "yes?" He simply said.

"You know, I have the feeling, and please don't be angry, that your family isn't the..best" I looked down, because I didn't want to meet his eyes. He remainded calm "What do you mean by that?"

"Uhm, how do I put it? They gave me same vibes as my family. Never were they at my side, but after I had something to show off or being proud of, everybody was there, I was then the favorite child and so on.. You know?"

I felt his hand leafing my head and he got a bit more serious "My family isn't like that, I swear. They maybe just arrived now, but I mean they still help me"

Without even thinking I raised my voice a bit."But what about them saying that you wouldn't make it? You said yourself that it hurt you, but you're just ignoring that or what? Why are you still hanging on them so much..."

He sighted, trying his best, even though I was getting louder, not to do the same. "They are my family.."

I looked him in the eyes, speaking soft again "I said that once to, but here I am without one, because once your not good enough anymore, they won't need you anymore"

His face was a bit scared. Not of me, but of the thought it could be true. I stood up and wanted to leave.

"No, y/n, don't go!" And I stopped and turn around "Please think for awhile about my words. I have to go to the Lorax and explain him..this mess"

This is were I went out of his house to meet with the Lorax, who was already waiting for me to explain how this could happened and eventually to tell me that he was, like always, in the right.

(I lied, this is the longest chapter, lol. Ideas on how the story should proceed are always welcome :>)
