A Call To War

The knight/VA wakes up to find the mage/listener missing from their side

Sleepy: "Hm? I wonder where he/she is..."

VA gets up and walks downstairs to find the listener making breakfast

Inhaling the scent of bacon and fresh bread: "Babe that smells amazing... What's the occasion?"

"Awwww baby. You're to sweet...Come here"

VA hugs the listener from behind and kisses their cheek as the listener blushes slightly

Teasingly: "My little cherry tomato"

A knock at the door startles the couple

Softly and cautious: "Stay here and run when I tell you to"

VA opens the door to reveal a messenger

Relieved: "Oh good morning! How may I help you?"

The messenger hands VA a scroll and leaves

Shocked: "War?!... I had heard the south was being rebellious but to start a war..."

"Oh hey... no no no.. It'll be okay." VA walks over to hold them. "I know war is always scary and I know what you've been through but I'm sure this is nothing. If it was that serious they'd be asking for mages too right? Besides we can spend the day together and I'll leave tomorrow morning."

"So what shall we do today my love?"

"A picnic by the lake sounds like a grand idea, I'll saddle the horses."

The pair leave to the lake

Sigh: "It's quiet in the forest today. I'd swear even the animals know what's going on..."

VA sees the listener is still distraught by the news

"I know we walked away from that life after our last battle and here I am running right back to it, but baby you have to understand that I would fight in a thousand more battles if it meant I could keep you safe..." VA trails off as they sigh "If I had a choice I wouldn't leave you, but the king sent a special summons to me, I can't just ignore that"

The gentle chirp of forest birds can be heard as the reach the lakeside. The VA and listener dismount and lay the blanket on a soft patch of grass.

"I know you're scared. I won't lie and say that everything is going to be okay because I don't know what will happen and I won't make promises I might not be able to keep, but I will promise you one thing: If it is within my power to do so, I will return to you my love. I swear it..."

Some time passes and the rush of horses going by can faintly be heard as the listener turns to look in the direction of the road

"Must be some of the eastern knights heading for the capital." Mockingly: "A good knight is never late, never punctual but always early" The VA let's out a disgusted scoff "Raiden and his lackeys always were such show-offs. Even in training."

The listener tilts their head at the statement.

"What? ... Oh don't tell me you'd actually be interested in old stories from my squire days."

The VA gives a sigh as the listener faces them eagerly.

"Oh fine, but only one then we have to head back. My first impression of Raiden was...mislead. I thought he was charming" Listner laughs and the VA gives them a pinch: "Are you going to let me finish or not?" The VA chuckled "Anyway, I tried to impress him, but he seemed more obsessed with his ego and a mirror than anything else. How he survived is still a mystery, but back to the point. They always found such unorthodox methods to complete their challenges just so they wouldn't scratch their armour or get some dirt on it. The knight captain got so furious with them that he nudged them into the pig pens with his horse" The VA and listener both laugh. "Needless to say. They didn't test their luck much after that."

The listener shuffles closer and hugs the VA. Refusing to let go even as they head back to their horses

"I love you so much my darling starlight..." The VA kisses the listener goodnight as they fall asleep in each others arms one last time
