Grandpa had always been blunt, said things exactly how they were never sugarcoating it unless mummy was giving him "the look." So how he thought telling us kids the backstory of our family was a good idea was beyond my 1st-grader brain.
We were all pretty excited, well except Mizuna who knew a bit about our family's history through previous tellings of the story. "Kuyo, Blitzy, and Ryon are much too young for this Grandpa." she scolded, much like Mum would.
Kuyo just did his classic pouty lip thinking he was gonna miss out on the story, but Ryon stood his cheeks puffed, and his hands on his hips. "Mizuna you were pretty young too so how come you..." Ryon stopped as Grandpa clapped his hands the rather small boy sitting back down quickly.
Grandpa cleared his throat. "Your parents are all gone for the night," he said calmly, before continuing. "This story is meant to educate you on where you came from and why you should keep up with your magic studies, maybe this story will keep you safe one day," he smiled.
Grandpa sighed before starting. Grandpa started with how when he was very young his mother would tell him and his sibling a story about their eyes, and how it was a curse but also a gift. It was a gift in the sense it could protect them, but it was a curse cause it was given to them by a demon.
She would then tuck them all in for bed, wishing them all sweet dreams. Grandpa paused for a moment, Mizuna huffing. "This is the part I didn't want you guys to hear," she said just as Grandpa continued.
Grandpa could recall being whisked out of his bed by his eldest sister, all of his siblings were panicked he could barely understand what was being said, "Edward I told you to get them ready quick!" she yelled. Edward the oldest brother but still younger than the sister shot back. "There's 5 of them Rosalind stop coddling him and get him dressed," he ordered back.
The two older siblings rushed the little ones out the bedroom window each one asking, "What about mummy?" Rosalind not having an answer for them ignored their questions and just rushed them along.
Grandpa said he was too young but back then he wondered how both his brother and sister were able to guide six little ones out of a village in lockdown magic users with the ability to see through walls and detect magic no matter how small.
Now that I think back not sure why Big sis was so worried this would scare us... I loved this story.
Grandpa looked at his watch then back to us and smiled. "Okay kiddos time for beddy byes!" Seriously?!
I stood. "Grandpa you can't just stop right there!" I yelled loud enough that Kuyo jolted awake.
Grandpa sighed grabbing the sleepy Kuyo and placing him on his lap, "Fine ill finish but don't whine when you wake up cranky Blitzy."
He cleared his throat once more, Grandpa throughout this journey was wrapped up and hidden on Rosalind's back being the youngest.
Grandpa would poke his little head out every chance he got, Rosalind hissing telling him to stay hidden unless he thought he could survive without his head, grandpa at the time took that as a threat of being punished but looking back knowing the context she was more than likely being quite literal.
Edward sighed relieved, "The boat..." he quickly ushered the kids in getting in right after, "Come on Rosalind plenty of room for you and Light," he said with a smile.
Rosalind let her guard down for the first time since they fled the farm, just as the teen turned BANG a gun goes off hitting her in the shoulder, Grandpa yelped, but Rosalind caught herself falling straight on her face no doubt meant death here.
All the younger ones screamed for her, "Rosalind!" all she could think of doing was using her wind magic, she blew a gust of wind forcing the boat out into the water.
The men that shot Rosalind didn't fire again only due to their leader telling them not to.
Grandpa could feel Rosalind's magical aura scrambling trying to reform so it could protect her, the leader stepped closer, "Rosalind I think this is the first time I have ever seen your face in such a way, ah I see you didn't save them all you still got one," grandpa could feel his heart pumping he was safe right? Big sis would protect him!
When the man went to reach for the makeshift toddler carrier, Rosalind lunged biting his cheek.
The man pushed her off. "Y-you damn witch," he said holding the cheek that she bit.
Grandpa said he could feel Rosalind's aura grow cold and dark, the reason for this was she had activated the ability the villagers were hunting them for.
The villagers all chatted among each other murmuring about how "The demon! It's her!"
Rosalind tied the carrier tight she mumbled something Grandpa couldn't hear but he honestly thinks she had been praying, mostly from the way she was breathing.
Rosalind finally spoke to them, "You call me and my siblings demons but who breaks down the door of a single mother with hopes of ending her and her children in their beds, cowards," she said clear anger in her voice.
The leader looked at his men, "Fire you idiots!" and they did.
Rosalind according to Grandpa was quite gifted as a mage not only had she mastered our family curse but her wind magic, she hadn't quite mastered her lightning magic which he admits probably would have allowed her to take less damage here.
She fought hard thankfully she closed the distance quickly and didn't receive any more holes from the rifles Grandpa was unsure if she killed any of the villagers but she made sure that the leader died.
She kneeled in front of the young man as he struggled to move. "You probably had some sorta dirty trick my mother wouldn't have just let you and your goons kill her." Rosalind waited for him to say something anything.
The man looked up at her. "Your family's magic was given to you by Verrat the demon of Betrayal so I used an artifact from the goddess of Hope it kept her docile." He then laid his head back into the mud. "Are you going to kill me, Rosalind?"
The teen sighed not answering as she formed a blade with her wind magic stabbing him.
She then stood leaving him to bleed out.
"And that's it kiddos how did you enjoy the story?" He asked with a smile on his face.
He didn't get a lot of feedback only Blitz and Mizuna were still in the land of awake. "Heh, it was great!" I said with a smile and a yawn.
Mizuna stood her hands on her hips. "Grandpa you're lucky most of them fell asleep it was a terrible story!" She scolded before grabbing me and bringing me to my feet. "Say ni ni Blitzy." And before I could even open my mouth I was dragged upstairs.
After Mizuna helped me get into my jammies and left the room I smiled ill have to tell Grandpa in the morning how cool I thought the story was.
