Later on in the morning, I am weaving my way through the lunch-crowd foot traffic to our favourite café, Doğaciyiz Gourmet.

It's the type of hangout that sees a healthy amount of business no matter what time of day you come at. But instead of being deterred by the constant hum of conversation, I like the liveliness of the place. I get to meet people from all walks of life here and for just a few hours we have a shared experience.

As I approach the bistro, I see that the outside tables are already full with ravenous customers. But that's not the only thing with a voracious appetite as everywhere there are tables on the narrow sidewalk and even some on the street. The wait staff are scurrying about between tables taking orders and bringing out food. Functional chaos is what I call it. I squeeze my way through, bumping into a few patrons and greeting a few regulars I recognize including the staff. Stepping over the threshold feels like crossing into another dimension. The cool air of the air-conditioner is a wonderful welcome after walking outside in the blistering heat. Inside the place is much more relaxed with low, vaulted ceilings and yellow lighting. There is a bookcase to the one side filled with little treasures and souvenirs that the owner will take a whole hour telling you about if only you would let him. I made that mistake once but I also gained a friend from that day on. And since then he always makes sure to save us our usual table no matter how packed the place may be.
