I read this in school for ELA I in our dystopian fiction section of the class. I don't own the book, but I was able to read book one and two.

The basic premise of the series is that after a war (in which the main subject or reason for the war was abortion), the government has passed laws or legislation to fix the issue. Babies when born can be storked if not wanted; put on random people's/family's doorsteps. If the (usually) mother isn't caught as she abandons the baby on the doorstep, the family has to take care of the baby. The baby can also become a ward of the state, but usually a family has to take care of the baby. Between the ages of 13-18, a family who no longer wants their blood or adoptive child can sign them away to a camp where they will be unwound; taken apart to be used as organ and body parts for other people. Religious families may also tithe their children, which is a great honor for the family and the child who will be unwound. The book is about teenagers who try to escape this fate, and the different movements (good and bad) taken against this dystopian world.
