The End of an Era

Love is a funny thing, it comes like a whisper, until your heart begins to scream.

Love becomes an aching in your chest, one that can't be cured by a doctor. Not even the ale that courses through my veins can cure it.

Love is also the thing that shackles me to him. It's the chain that keeps me here when I should leave.

Instead, I stay, and I watch from afar as his heart shatters.

Every time the happiness in his body is depleted, my heart cry's out.

The pain it causes ringing through my body. The vibrations build an unbearable pressure in my eyes, until my dam is forced to break.

Without fail, I stuff my inner turmoil down, giving him the best version of myself. And without fail, he goes back. Back to the man who leaves him in shambles.  The man that fails to see his true worth. He fails to see the attributes that captured my heart, leaving me defenseless to his charms.

When he lethargically made his way to me, I knew his heart had been left behind. Thrown about carelessly, used for the sick enjoyment of another. His heart was viewed as an object of entertainment.

Once he made his way to me, I welcomed him with open arms. Arms that could only close when he was encased in them.

Words of endearment flowed from the depths of my heart. Words I could only say in his times of  need.

Despite the noise and clamor of the party, the space surrounding us was serene. Rivaling any peace the sky could conjure.

The time soon came for us to abandon that peace. The comfort of blankets and ice cream was far more appealing than the deafening music.

Once we reached his house, all the emotions he concealed in public began to reveal themselves. The shell of my best friend had returned. The shell I tried desperately to restore.

I pleaded with him, begging him not to return to the man responsible for his despair. A man colored with flaws.

Of course it was selfish and hypocritical when I myself couldn't leave him. I myself was broken, reduced to a shell as the man I loved ran into the arms of another.

I was asking for the impossible. I was asking him to retrieve his heart from a cage he didn't put it in.

No one could choose who they fell in love with. I couldn't judge him for going back when I couldn't leave. When he ran back to the man I could never be, I also ran.

Leaving behind the man I loved, for a man who loved me.
