The Way it Began: Blue

Start from the beginning

"I'll find you, just go." His voice was urgent, yet calm; but there was clear panic in his eyes. The roaring in my ears got louder. "I said: Run!" I felt a gust of wind as Kai disappeared, but I couldn't move. I was stone, rooted to the spot.

The truck sped off with a screech, leaving black tracks on the asphalt, and suddenly Kai was back. She gripped my arm tight,

"Let's go!" And suddenly I felt like I was riding a bolt of lightning. On instinct, I slammed a foot into the ground. It made a sound like the crack of thunder and we stopped so hard she was yanked to the ground. Thankfully we had only moved a few feet.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?!" I demanded, "We're not just leaving him with that creep!"

"Do you think I'm stupid?! Obviously I'm not leaving him, but I need to get you somewhere safe!"

"No!" My voice rumbled, the roaring in my ears was like a landslide, "I won't go anywhere without the two of you. We're both going to get him. Together."

It felt like every muscle in my body was about to burst through my skin. Like there was something larger inside of me, trying to split me open and force it's way out. Something deep down inside was telling me to let it.

"Don't be stupid, Irwin, we'll come back for you-"

    "And, if you don't?!"

    "We wi-"

"No! I told you before. Wherever we go, we go together."

    "You can't come with me."

    "Yes. I. Can!"

And then I let the thing inside split me open. I heard a scream and could only assume it'd come from me. Kai stopped talking and stumbled back in shock. Suddenly I felt taller, bigger, stronger. I looked at my hands, covered in short, blonde fur, claws sprouting from my nailbeds. I felt my teeth in my mouth, longer, thicker, sharper. And suddenly I had confirmed what I'd secretly hoped all this time. Maybe what, deep down, I already knew.

    I was like them.

I squared my shoulders and set a determined gaze on my sister.

"We're going to get him. Together."

Strangely enough, she looked relieved. Like maybe she'd been hoping for this, too. She gave me her signature 'let's fuck shit up' smirk; and, in a blink, she had transformed, too. She tossed me her bag and I shouldered all three. It was a bit bulky and awkward, but they suddenly seemed light as feathers. We squared up, ready to take off after the truck.

"Glad you're finally pulling your weight."

    I chuckled, "Shut up."

"I'll try to pace myself, but you better keep up." I cracked my neck,

    "Watch me. Slowpoke."

Clearly, I wasn't quite as fast, but I was able to push off the ground hard enough to take obscenely large strides, which helped bridge the gap; and, true to her word, she did in fact pace herself. Within moments, the truck was back in sight. Our brother was within reach.
