"Both of you, run!" I yelled, throwing them my duffel and ripping off my seat belt. I punched Phil in the face and slammed my foot on the brake. The truck screeched to a halt, and Kaili leapt out the window. Irwin threw himself at the door, but missed the window. His body slammed violently into the truck door, tearing it off its hinges. Irwin, and the door, went flying out onto the road, skidding on the asphalt, making sparks.
I stared in disbelief as Kai helped him up. They grabbed the duffels and seemed to be waiting. Phil took advantage of my pause and grabbed hold of me.
"You're not going anywhere, Adam. You're mine."
"I'll find you, just go!" They hesitated, "I said: Run!" I screamed at them. Kai nodded and started to run. And when I say run, I mean run. She was a flash of white hair and blue duffels, a flesh toned blur. And just as fast as she disappeared, she was back, stumbling to a stop as she realized that Irwin could never keep up. She grabbed Irwin's arm and tried to pull him. They both became a blur for a second, and then stopped abruptly and I saw Kai get yanked backwards and fall on the ground. I tried to fight my way out of Phil's grasp, but he wasn't letting go anytime soon. He pounded the gas and tried to take off, Kai and Irwin were yelling at each other, their figures getting smaller as Phil drove away.
I bit his arm, hard, and he let me go with an angry yell. I tried to throw myself out the door that Irwin had broken off the hinges, but a hand grabbed my ankle. I used my free leg to kick Phil in the face, but his grip didn't budge. I tried Dragon-out on him, but it just wouldn't happen. Maybe I was too caught off-guard by the whole situation to get mad. Well, mad enough, I guess- because I was definitely pissed. All I could focus on was hoping Kaili and Irwin were running and safe. I looked in the rear view mirror and it looked like they were, thankfully, gone. The only thing I could see was a tiny yellow car in the distance.
Wait. That wasn't a car.
I stopped struggling, staring in disbelief, unable to process what I was seeing.
The biggest dog I had ever seen was galloping behind us. And it was gaining on us. But, as it got closer, I realized that this dog didn't look quite right.
And then I realized that dogs don't wear glasses. Or run side-by-side with cheetahs.
IRWIN
I'm gonna be honest, I felt like something was fucky as soon as we got in the truck. I should've said something. I'm smarter than that. But even certified geniuses are fucking stupid sometimes. High intelligence, low wisdom, okay? Also, I was really tired of walking.
Like. Really tired.
But the guys vibes were undeniably rancid, and they just got worse the longer we drove, and quickly, too. We couldn't have gone more than a few miles before he dropped the 'harmless but shitty Old Man' act and- literally- revealed his true form.
Phil.
I mean, I assumed it was Phil. On account of him calling himself 'Daddy' (Ew), and calling Jace 'Adam' (Double Ew), and the weird, color changing eyes (Ok. Admittedly, pretty cool- unfortunately).
Instantly I felt anxiety fill my chest. I heard my blood roaring in my ears, felt my heart pounding wildly in my chest, each beat like a boom of thunder.
Jace screamed for us to run and punched the guy in the face. Next thing I knew, the truck was screeching to a halt and Kai had leapt through the window. I gripped mine and Jace's bags to my chest and launched myself after her, pushing off with my legs as hard as I could. But I missed the window, slamming into the door instead. I heard the metal scream, felt myself drop like a stone, and suddenly I was sledding across the asphalt, sparks flying behind me. Kai yanked me up as soon as I came to a stop, and we turned just in time to see Jace try to leap out behind us and get yanked back. I felt myself beginning to take a step forward.
