They finish the project and go to a local fast food place. ''What about a bet?'' Evan blurts out disturbing the silence between them. ''What do you mean 'a bet'?'' Jessie asks confused. ''What we talked about in class. You said you can prove it's real, so if you can prove demons, spirits and stuff like that exists I will do something you want and if you can't, you'll do something I want.'' He answers. ''Sure, I know a bridge that is supposed to be haunted by a demon. I have some stuff we can use to try to communicate with it.'' He agrees to the bet, he already knows what he will make him do, little does he know, so does Evan. They finish their food and go home. They agree it was getting late and they had school again tomorrow.
When Jessie got home his mother welcomed him warmingly asking how his day was. Jessie wasn't feeling like talking to her because of the bet he made, he could accidentally slip it out and give himself away. He didn't want to risk it and simply told her he was really tired. His mother understood, wished him goodnight and he went upstairs. He thought about the bet. 'was it a good idea? He is known for his tricks and mischief.' He thought. He really was tired and decided not to think about it. He changed into his sleepwear and went to bed.
Meanwhile when Evan got home, his mother wasn't there. He guessed she was working a night shift. She is a security guard at a mental hospital and usually works at night. Evan was used to coming home to an empty house. He didn't mind, he had people around him all day, so he appreciated the time he got alone. He appreciated his alone time a little more and also went to sleep.
A few days passed at school and the bet had yet to happen. Evan had run it by Jessie the next day, but he still has to prepare some stuff. Evan would sometimes see him walking through the hallway with a rectangular box and as always, reading his books. Clearly doing extra research to win the bet. 'his punishment must be really good if he is trying so hard' Evan thought. He had asked Jessie for the location of the bridge so he could go check it out for himself. So after school he did. He went to the bridge and didn't see what was so scary. He looked around and found nothing that could mean anything supernatural. He stayed for a bit to see if anything would happen but nothing did. 'Now I know for sure I will win the bet' he thought to himself, 'he is going to hate his punishment but I will love it'. He goes home confident about the bet. Knowing he will win it.
A few more days pass and it's Monday, all the boys did was glance at each other in the hall, both thinking they'd win the bet. Today at lunch Evan went up to Jessie, ''The bet is happening,'' he starts ''Tonight''. Jessie just smiles. ''If you think you are ready to lose, then let's do it.'' Jessie says confidently, catching a lot of people's attention. After all, he was known as very quiet and shy. Little did they know he just wasn't much into talking and would rather learn new things, and was usually pretty sarcastic, which is why people that did talk to him would always get offended and not talk to him after.
Word about the bet gets around school, they don't know what the bet is about but they don't care. Some root for Jessie but most root for Evan. Evan is more known in school as well, considered he pranks everybody and has blackmail on most people. He wasn't the kind of person to use it against anyone though. He just likes to know things others don't. At the end of the day the school had divided itself into two teams, team Jessie and team Evan. The boys were enjoying the attention and the school was enjoying the spirit. Nothing violent started to happen, but a lot of creativity came loose in one day. The artists in the school even made logos for the two competitors. Evan's logo was a Jaguar on the letter 'E' surrounded by fire and water, symbolizing his strength and instinct, Jessie had an owl on the letter 'J' in a pretty cursive with Yin and Yang, symbolizing his courage and intelligence.
The hype didn't seem to end until the end of the school day came. Both boys had already informed their parents they would be home later than usual and with that they went to the bridge.
