Chapter Fifty-One: The Death and Birth of a King

Vhaela Targaryen

The bright morning sun streams through the window that sits in front of my desk. I feel the warmth spread to my cheeks allowing them to appear slightly flushed. My hands move at the base of my hair undoing the band that secures my braid together.

My fingers then begin to part the braid that I put in last night to sleep in. As I unravel my hair, they fall out in loose curls against me. Once they are all free, I sway my head from side to side trying to get any loose tangles out.

I then begin to run my hand through my hair feeling the softness which each stroke. But at the sound of my door abruptly opening I turn in my chair to find Aemond bursting through my chamber. His eye darts around my chamber until he spots me.

His expression seems dazed as he enters the room and toward me.

I quickly get out of my chair and head to him as I ask, "Aemond, what's wrong?"

He takes a step forward before pausing and then saying softly, "The king is dead."

My eyes widen at his words. Aemond directs his attention to the floor as he seems to be in thought. My heart aches for him. His father had just died. I know he was most likely expecting it sometime soon but it happening is a completely different set of emotions.

And I knew that he would be conflicted with his feelings about it. I knew how Viserys treated his children with Alicent. At first, when we were younger, he was very involved with us but as we got older, he grew more distant. And with his illness, he grew almost nonexistent.

"I'm so sorry Aemond," I say nonetheless with a small frown on my lips.

He shakes his head at me softly before saying "Don't be. You know how he was."

I give him a faint nod in understanding. Aemond then raises his head, and his eye connects with mine. His expression does not hold an inch of sadness as he simply stares at me. I shift my weight under his intense stare.

So, I then ask, "Why are you staring at me like that?"

A faint smile appears on his lips as he slowly approaches me. As he inches toward me, I slightly have to raise my gaze to meet his own. He says nothing and stares at me with a playful expression. A bright smile quickly makes its way to my lips as I let out a soft chuckle.

I say with a playful roll of my eyes and a light laugh, "Quit it. What do you want?"

He takes another step toward me and my breath hitches at his action. I watch his eye lower, and I follow it as he looks at my hand to my side. He reaches out with his hand and joins them together. As he takes my hand in his he begins to rub my knuckles softly with his thumb.

Aemond then raises his gaze toward me and says, "You never received my letter... which means you never got to respond to the contents within it."

My eyes widen at his underlying meaning. I feel my heart begin to pound rapidly to the point where it is ringing in my head. A large gulp runs down my throat as I stare up at Aemond waiting for him to say the words.
