"Cool. What kind?"
"Sheep. I would raise sheep."
Joel answered as Violet giggled, Joel turning to her and smiling softly, liking seeing her smile again. Violet teased,
"Sheep."
"Ha Ha. They're quiet... and do what they're told."
Joel rolled his eyes at Violet, who stuck her tongue out, making Joel laugh quietly before Ellie watched her parents wait I mean her friends? flirt, changing the conversation quickly making Joel and Violet lose eye contact,
"Yeah, yeah. Okay. So, just you and a buncha sheep. Romantic."
Violet asked after a slight awkward silence,
"And what about you?
Where are you gonna go?"
Ellie hummed and then started talking, Violet nodding along as she continued to speak smiling thinking about her dream,
"It's probably because I grew up in the QZ. Behind you, there's ocean, and ahead of you, there's a wall. Nowhere else to look but up. I read everything I could in the school library. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Jim Lovell. But you know who my favorite is?"
Joel spoke at the same time as Ellie, making her laugh, even causing Violet to laugh again, this is the most she has spoken and smiled since that morning.
"Sally Ride."
"Sally fսck¡n' Ride! Best astronaut name ever."
It got quiet, and Violet watched Ellie bite her nails before opening her mouth and then stopping and then doing it again before she actually spoke finally,
"It'll work, right? The vaccine?"
Violet sighed, she knew her stance, a cure for fungal infections never existed before, why would they exist now with less resources, less doctors.
Joel spoke softly,
"It's a little late to start wonderin'."
It got silent again before Ellie spoke slight tears welled up in her eyes,
"I tried, with Sam— and Lily..."
Violet's heart stopped as her face dropped when she spoke her voice cracking at the end,
"Tried what?"
Ellie looked at Violet nervous before continuing,
"I knew they were infected. I rubbed some of my blood into their bites. I know, I know, it was stupid. But I... I wanted to save them."
Violet sighed before thinking about her sister.
Violet hoped Lily didn't suffer much and she couldn't stop thinking about how she killed her sister, infected or not. She also wished Lily had told her. And not hidden it, she wishes she could've held Lily just one more time. Violet spoke her voice cracking,
