Ch-1| line without a hook

Start from the beginning

"Hilarious even" she spoke wiping her tears
"-unless you think I'm giving birth to a child- please C-Conner?!" Conner furrowed his brows at his friend, was she that eager to let him off with this chick?

While all this time Cielle genuinely had to think to herself whether she owed the girl some money.

"No- no no cause you can have him, he's all yours, oh god this is amusing." she sighed as she snickered at their dumbstruck expression, until she felt a sharp pain in her scalp when someone pulled her up by her hair. "that make you stop laughin' now-? Huh? I've told you time and time again that I don't want you anywhere near him, or his house, his class even." Esther knew what she sounded like, she knew that by now everyone had their eyes on her. But that was exactly what she wanted.

"And you've made little to no effort to show that you've been a good girl, and you know what happens to bad girls?? They get their ass beat." She said digging her knee into her stomach, "now you wanna know something funnier? I could continue to beat you up and your little boy toy over there-" she said eyeing a tense Conner, "is gonna do absolutely nothing about it."

Cielle remained quiet as she took another blow to the head when something hard met with the side of her skull. The girl bit her lip from letting out any sign of weaknesses, the last thing she'd wanted to do was to give Esther exactly what she wanted.

Submission. Vulnerability. Arbitrary power.

She clenched her fist before she could even remotely think of doing something stupid. Much to her dismay, Esther had a height advantage over her, being a littler over by 3-4 inches.

She glowered at her, looking smugly at the bruise forming on her cheek, due to her hit, "and what makes it even better is that you have no one to reach out to right now. I mean the last thing you'd want to do is worry your father-" Cielle shot her a sharp look at the mention of the word as she continued ignoring her gaze on her, "and have him come plummeting down to the headmistress's office, catching his only child acting out, no?"

It took Cielle every vein in her body not to bite her back in the neck, to give her a taste of her own medicine, "I thought you knew better than to drag him into all of this Esther, don't go there." She spoke back, finally breaking her silence with a response, however little it may have been.

"And I thought you knew better than to follow him around like his lapdog, I wouldn't go that far if I were you either." She said bitterly as her grip tightened around her hair, "geez is that your way of looking out for me? I appreciate the tough love but I don't want none of it, you can keep the scraps." Cielle bit back, her voice barely over a whisper as she gazed at the blood rushing to her palms, probably because she'd been clutching it so tight.

Just then she felt a smearing pain on her cheek, she bit her lip as she clasped her eyes shut to blink away the tears. She didn't want this. None of this. She didn't want this for Esther either. She could only hope the girl had been through a lot to have to hate her so menacingly much.

Conner rushed to her side grabbing Esther's wrist on the way before she gave the girl a bruised lip, "that's enough Terry, why don't you and your little kitty party go back to licking your catnip now? Yeah? I'm sure you've got places to be." He tried to keep his calm, however failing miserably as he let his frustration get the best of him.

Cielle scoffed at the nickname and the growing fondness he had for the girl, but she chose to shrug it off. Unlike someone, she didn't have a bone to pick with everything not going exactly her way.

Esther smirked as she let her arm fall to her side cupping his cheek with the other one "took you long enough, happy birthday babe." She kissed him on the cheek and looked victoriously at a wide eyed Cielle. "A little peck on the cheek won't hurt right? Or are you gonna bite me again? Woof woof! Come one girl! Come on now! Don't be shy.." she pouted, kneeling down to her level as her voice dropped dangerously low, feeble enough for only Cielle to be able to pick it up.

'When did it all go so wrong?' Cielle could only think to herself as she tried hard to recognise the girl standing before her.

And with that Esther walked off, a smirk tugging her lips as her heels clicking were the only audible noise echoing the halls.

"Hey you ok-" Conner was cut off by a slap on his arm, "-don't even." Cielle broke his gaze as she tried to help herself up much to the pain coursing through her body. "Cielle you're clearly not fine let me-"

"And you've clearly done enough." she snapped, instantly regretting what she said, wanting to take it back, "-look just-" god she felt awful catching the lonesome look in his eyes. Maybe even worse because she knew it hurt her more than him. Pity.

Pity. Is what it was.

The Silence lingered heavy in the air, thicker than the tension now noticeably present between the two.

"-I'm sorry Connie" A nickname she only took when he'd been badly injured or for when she babied him to give into her demands, "-just go home yeah? You've got a big day lined up, I'm sure Mrs.Myers is waiting for you." She gave him a soft look before turning to give him something from her bag.

"Cielle-"

"-Oh yeah and one more thing, hold on stand still-" she said reaching for the box before finally holding it out for him, "there."

The two let the silence engulf them as he took the box from her, Cielle walked upto him grabbing ahold of his arm and giving it a light squeeze.

"Happy birthday best boy." She said as a soft smile glazed her face, reaching her eyes.

She caught him smiling, if only for a second before his gaze dropped to her again, "I don't know what to do with you." She chuckled almost hitting him on the chest, as an attempt to lighten the mood, "and you don't have to, just let me be as I am, you know I'll find my way back to you."

"Just keep swimming." He lightly chuckled, trying to ooze the tension building in his muscle, albeit feeling horrible for holding himself back earlier. "Just keep swimming." She said back. Before she turned her back to him and walked towards the exit.

"Conner?"

"You." he spoke softly.

"I'll see you later ok? I promise." She smiled at him, not wanting to worry him on his day. She'd hate herself to have him be slumped down because of what happened today. Although she couldn't help but feel a pang of betrayal in her chest from the latter of the two. "Promise?" He looked hopeful.

"Mighty jumbo promise."

He snickered before shaking his thoughts off and saluting her a bye as he watched her laugh lightly and leave at last.

He'd wished he'd done better too Cielle.

A/n: I'm trying to build a strong character for Cielle, but I don't want to reveal too much because I going to leave behind just enough to have the rest of you figure her out, she's just as mine as she is yours by the end of the day :)
