???: What were you thinking?!
The woman has a thick Russian accent and Vodka bottle litter the room. This has to me Ms. Romanov.
Karol: I don't know.
Maria: Thinking like that will get you killed!
Karol: I had no idea that many people were after you.
Maria: Many people want, not only me, but most of the committee dead.
Karol: Why? What's the point?
Maria brings me over to her desk and sits me down in a chair directly across form her.
Maria: Okay, I will give you the break down on what we do. Are you ready to take the next step into this?
Karol: I'm as ready as I'm gonna be.
Maria: Perfect, The Ethics Committee's job is to make sure that what the foundation does is, well, ethical. That's our job on paper anyway, our real job to find people in need of punishing for doing heinous crimes and committing treason or stuff like that. Most of our orders come straight from the top, or the 05s if you want to be specific. To be frank, we wanted you because of what you did to one of our targets, Dr. Xenoville. You seemed like a cold guy and that's what we look for, reciting wise, and you fit the bill. You understand?
Karol: I do, but I have some questions. None are related to the Committee or MTF.
Maria: You're lucky I have some free time, what are your questions?
Karol: What Russian city are you from?
He eyes grow wide when I ask her the question.
Maria: I am from Murmansk. How did you know I was Russian?, most people just call me slavic.
Karol: Because I'm form Poland I know the different accents that distinguish slavs from one another.
Maria: What city in Poland are you from?
Karol: Białystok
Maria: I had a cousin that lived in Białystok. I though you might be from Krakow.
Karol: Well, that my family's cadet branch. My actual last name would be Stopkewich if it weren't for that.
Maria: Interesting, you want some vodka while we talk?
Karol: Uh
I pause for a moment, I don't want a repeat of what happened with me and 953. I trust Maria enough to drink with her, though. She seems nice.
Karol: Sure
Maria pours me a glass of Vodka and we drink while talking about anything from family to personal life situations. I like her, she might be a good person just to go talk to. I check my clock to see that it's 7:48am and I start to get worried. I guess she noticed and she checks her watch.
Maria: Oh shit, how far away is your living quarters?
Karol: Pretty *hic* far...
Maria: Tell you what, you can *hic* stay in my room here in the *hic* office. I have an extra cot.
Karol: deal, but don't be weird
Maria: I'm not like that!
We both laugh a little and stumble off towards her little sleeping quarters on he side of her office.
Karol: Hey, do you mind if I sleep without a *hic* shirt on?
Maria: You said don't be weird!
Karol: No! not for that reason! It's more comfortable!
Maria: Its okay, I'm just fucking with you!
I laugh a little and take my shirt off after I change into some more comfortable clothes to sleep in. Those clothes being my fatigues but no belt, boots, socks, or any sort of tactical gear. I lay down on the cot and look over to see Maria laughing.
Karol: *slurring his words* What's so funny?
Maria: You!
Karol: How?
Maria: You took your shirt off after telling me not to *hic* be weird!
Karol: Good point!
WE both laugh one more time and she turns the lights off to the room. I roll over to face the wall closest to me and start to drift off to sleep when I hear choppy breaths behind me.
Karol: *Slurring his words a little bit* Maria? You okay?
Maria: Just a little c-cold. I thought you were supposed to be a cold person!
Karol: Not towards those I care about.
The room goes quite and I start to fall asleep again before I'm interrupted by Maria's voice.
Maria: Y-you care about me?
What I said to her hits me like a freight train and begin to get embarrassed.
Karol: If you're cold, I'll give you my shirt.
Maria: Thank y-you.
I sit up on my loft and throw my shirt in her direction, she puts it on over her own shirt and lays back down.
Maria: Were you telling the truth, when you said you cared about me?
I pause for a moment, I guess there's no way out of it.
Karol: Yes
An awkward silence fills the room for what feels like ages. I lay back down and eventually fall asleep to the sound of Maria listening to music on her phone.
