Chapter 04 (Part Two)

"Oh please, like you've never done anything sexual in your life."

"That's different. This is my parents."

"My God, Nathan, you've done something sexual?" Elle asked with a slight glare. Nathan rolled his eyes, waving his hand to dismiss the topic.

"Anyway. Moving on. What's that?" he asked, referring to the book behind Elle. She glanced back to it, humming quietly as she picked it up. The cover was a dark green, and it reminded Nathan of Varian's V.C. Book of Knowledge. 

Holy shit. 

"I imagine you've seen Varian's. This was Daniel's." Elle mumbled, handing Nathan the book. He stared at it almost reverently, flipping through a few of the pages. Varian had been right about Elle keeping it, but Nathan never expected to see it- much less hold it.

He flipped to the back, where Varian had written in his. Daniel had done the same, and wrote a great deal more. 

"No one's ever seen this book, except for me. In the back is what he wrote a few days before they found him." Elle mumbled. Nathan paused, looking over a few of the entries and reading them to himself. 

Elle is pregnant. I hope it's a girl. I've always wanted a little girl. 

Vanessa's fourth birthday is today. I hope I get home in time to see her.

Nathan noticed that where Varian used his book to write down important things, Daniel used it more like a diary, and his entries were rarely longer than a sentence or two.

Flipping to the back, Nathan noticed the last entry was actually a letter, addressed to Elle. He cleared his throat, reading aloud. 

"Dear Elle, I'm sorry for what I've done. You were right, I am horrible. I don't deserve to live. But I want you to know that I love you. Tell Millie I love her, too. I never meant to hurt Vanessa, but that doesn't mean it's not my fault. I shouldn't have done that. I should have controlled myself. I should have come home as soon as I realized that we had a Changed vampire in our group. I hope that someday you can forgive me. To Nathan-" Nathan paused, frowning before he continued, "I'm sorry I'll never get to meet you. I'm sure you'll become a wonderful man. I love you, and I hope that someday, I might be able to meet you." 

Nathan glanced up to Elle, whose eyes were watery as she smiled slightly. "He chose your name. Nathaniel Tyler. Used to go on about how he just knew you'd be a boy, and that was what you'd be named. Couldn't convince him otherwise." 

Elle brought up a hand to quickly wipe at her eyes, then smiled fully. "Anyway, I want you to have it. It'd do you more good than me, anyway." 

"...I don't know what to say." Nathan murmured, looking back down to the book and closing it, tapping his fingers on the cover. 

Elle rolled her eyes, picking up a few pictures and looking them over. "'Oh gee, thanks Mom, that's really cool!'" Elle said, mimicking Nathan in a high voice. Nathan glared back.
