Harry Potter Year 3 Logic Puzzle Walkthrough

James Potter: I am next to my wife. The 4 corners are the 4 non-human characters in the puzzle (NOT animagi)

- Lily can either be in A5 or C5. Since Lily is human, she is in C5

Lily Potter: My son is at the top of my column, next to one of his best friends 

- Harry is in C1. Ron or Hermione are in B1 or D1

Harry Potter: My friend's sister is in B3. She's adjacent to 3 of 4 brothers at Hogwarts this year. None of the Weasley boys are adjacent

- Ginny is in B3

Ginny Weasley: The 4 Marauders make up a diagonal. Hermione is below me

- Hermione is in B4

- Ron must be in B1 or D1, which means he is not adjacent to Ginny. If he was in B1, he would be adjacent to any 1 of his 3 brothers, since they cannot be adjacent to each other. Therefore, Ron is in D1. Fred, George, and Percy are the other 3 brothers at Hogwarts this year

- The 4 Marauders are in C4, D3, and E2

Hermione Granger: Pets in the quiz are adjacent to their owners. My pet is in this quiz

Ron Weasley: The man at the bottom of my column assigned a book that bites. Sigh

- Crookshanks is adjacent to Hermione and in a corner (1/4 non-human characters). Therefore, Crookshanks is in A5

- Ron's pet (Peter Pettigrew) is in the quiz, which means they are adjacent. The only spot in the Marauder's diagonal is E2, so Peter is in that spot

- Hagrid is at the bottom of Ron's column, in D5

Crookshanks: There are 2 portraits in the quiz

Peter Pettigrew: This year's head boy shares a row with the Minister of Magic

Rubeus Hagrid: The other 4 Hogwarts employees in the puzzle make up a diagonal, in descending alphabetical order by 1st and last name

- The 2 portraits are the 2nd and 3rd/4 non-human corner characters

- Percy shares a row with Cornelius Fudge

- The only diagonal of 4 open in the quiz is B1-E4. Since Lupin is both a Marauder and Hogwarts employee, he is in D3

- Sirius is in the last Marauder spot, in C4

Remus Lupin: Draco is in my row, adjacent to the Weasley twins

Sirius Black: Snivellus and Witherwings (not my pet yet) are both in the quiz

- Draco is in row 3, which has 3 spots open: A3, C3, and E3. He is adjacent to Fred and George, who are both adjacent to Ginny, but not to each other. Malfoy cannot be in E3, which shares no adjacent spots with Ginny. If Malfoy was in C3, Fred and George would need to be adjacent, in B2 and C2, if they would be adjacent to him. Therefore, Malfoy is in A3. 

- Fred and George now must be in A2 and A4 to not be adjacent to Percy - who can be in C2 or C3. If Percy was in C2, however, he would be adjacent to Ron. Percy must be in C3

- Percy shares a row with Fudge - which means Fudge must be in E3, the only open spot left in  row 3

- Buckbeak is Hagrid's pet and isn't human, so must be in E5

- Snape is in the quiz, in the Hogwarts employee diagonal. Since the employees are in descending alphabetical order by first and last name, Snape cannot be in E4

Draco Malfoy: The conductor of the Knight Bus is adjacent to me

Percy Weasley: 'My head boy badge is gone'

Cornelius Fudge: I am adjacent to the woman that Harry blew up. She is the only one in her column whose name does not begin with an R

Buckbeak: I am adjacent to my owner's boss

- Stan Shunpike is the conductor of the Knight Bus. The only open spot adjacent to Malfoy (A2 and A4 are reserved for F/G) is B2 - so Stan is in B2

- Aunt Marge is adjacent to Fudge and must be in column D, where there are already 3 people whose first names start with an R. We do not know the 4th R yet

- Buckbeak is adjacent to Albus Dumbledore, who must be in the Hogwarts employees diagonal. Dumbledore is in E4

Stan Shunpike: 3 people in my row die by the end of the series

Albus Dumbledore: Professor Trelawney is adjacent to Sir Cadogan

- Peter is the 1st/3 people who die in Stan's row. The 2nd can potentially be Fred, but we don't yet know who is in C2 and D2

- Trelawney is the 4th Hogwarts employee named. Therefore, Trelawney is in B1 and Snape is in C2. Snape is the 2nd/3 people who die in his row

- Sir Cadogan is non-human and adjacent to Trelawney, so must be in A1

Sybill Trelawney: 'Welcome. How nice to see you in the physical world at last'

Severus Snape: The owner of the Three Broomsticks is in the puzzle

Sir Cadogan: I share a row with the lady whose honor I saved after she was brutally slashed

- Madam Rosmerta is the 4th person whose first name begins with an R in column D. We also know that the other empty spot D is reserved for Aunt Marge, but we do not yet know who goes where

- The Fat Lady is the last non-human corner, and is therefore in E1

- In Row 2 we are missing the 3rd person who died by the end of the series. Because Rosmerta and Marge do not die in the books, Fred must be in row 2, and is therefore in A2. George goes in A4

Fat Lady: Password?

Fred Weasley: 'I solemnly swear that I am up to no good.'

George Weasley: I think Ron has a crush on the woman (women) in my row

- Since Ron has a known crush on Rosmerta (and eventually Hermione), but definitely not on Aunt Marge, Rosmerta is the last member of George's row - in D4

- That leaves Marge in D2

Madam Rosmerta: 'Of all the people to go over to the Dark Side, Sirius Black was the last I'd have thought'

Aunt Marge: 'I won't have this namby-pamby, wishy-washy nonsense about not hitting people who deserve it.'
