He'd somehow figured out the code on the stones. Turns out only a few of them were actual Japanese characters, the others were a unique code that had been no match for his intelligence.

Dreams of the moon. Under a bush of foxglove. Orange is the Key.

You figured the first part was pertaining to the moon puzzle you had come across. The foxglove was an alternate name for the beautiful yet deadly fuchsia digitalis plant you had seen growing abundantly in the forest. That really didn't help narrow things down.

"I don't get it." You bit your lip. "Orange is the key... Do you think there is another key?"

He shook his head. "At first, I thought I may have got it wrong, but I went over it several times and this is literally what it translates to. I think we should go back and look around."

"Where though? There was digitalis growing everywhere. And the key we have is not orange. I feel like we really have nothing additional to go on."

He frowned, disappoint overtaking his features, as he stared down at the riddle.

"But we can go take another look, maybe this would point us in the right direction."

"Yeah?" A small smile crept onto his lips. "Saturday morning?"

...

You slipped the mystery key into your pocket as you heard the knock at your front door. You hadn't hung out with Jughead the last two days, and you hadn't been sure he'd even remember your plans. You opened the door and couldn't help but smile. He wore a pair of black pants with bondage straps, a flannel shirt, a cozy denim jacket, and his black boots. Of course, the beanie was on his head, with quite a few strands of his raven air falling out near his eye. He smiled back at you, causing your heart to flutter.

"You ready to break ground on the case of the bizarre key and the befuddling stepping stones?"

"Yes." You laughed while locking your front door.

Once you were off your street and headed in the direction of the forest, he glanced towards you. "Well, I guess you got your wish."

"What do you mean?"

"Archie found out about my humble abode, and as of last night, I'm staying at his place. At least for a bit until I figure some things out."

"I didn't tell anyone."

"I know." He elbowed you playfully. "Archie came in for an early morning football practice and we ran into each other. Speaking of which I am going to be the photographer for the first game of the season."

"I didn't think you'd be interested in a football match."

"It's for the Blue and Gold. And I can photograph abandoned buildings and crime scenes by day and a bunch of high school jocks by night. What can I say, I contain multitudes."

You cut through the Blossom Pumpkin Patch that wouldn't be opening for another few hours. Soon making it to the stepping stones, and before long examining various foxglove plants in the area. What seemed like hours later, Jughead put his back against a maple tree, sliding down into a sitting position. He rubbed his eyes and muttered the riddle again. You took a seat next to him and couldn't stop yourself from admiring him. He must have felt your eyes on him because he looked at you with a curious face.

"I was just thinking, maybe we should go back on that hilltop. I mean that's where we found the key. We could have missed something last time." You spoke quickly.

"I was thinking it would be a bit risky to go in the middle of the day... but if you're up for it. Maybe there will be some magic talisman that lights up in the sun leading us to the next clue." You both laughed. He jumped up and helped you to your feet. You still hadn't spotted anyone else in the woods that day and took it as a good sign to proceed forward. He held out his hand when you arrived at the base of the hill, helping you furtively scale the now somewhat familiar slope.

"Over there." You pointed to a unique digitalis plant, its flowers a vivid orange.

"Orange is the key." Jughead fell to his knees and began surveying the area of the plant. You dropped beside him carefully examining the ground, soon uncovering a small slot embedded into a piece of stone.

"I think I found something." You pulled the strange key from your pocket. You looked at Jughead as if for agreement before placing the key in the slot and turning it. A distinctive hinge noise was heard a few feet away.

"That must have released some kind of locking mechanism." He rushed over. "Ah ha. Hollow." He stomped his foot. You went over as he swung open a wooden door. Inside, was a dilapidated ladder leading downwards. He searched your eyes, as if wondering if this was as far as you'd go. Would you really want to go down this mysterious hole that could contain startling horrors? The answer was yes. So long as you remained with him, you were up for any adventure.
