"Yes, he's the furthest desk over there, just after the island" he looks to where I point and turns back to me
"Thank you" he then goes by me and continues on his way, as an android you follow strict protocols, and directions as he moves you can only see machine, even the way he talks. I wonder if this was a way of telling me cyberlife has caught up to my antics and there's no way of getting out of this one. I exhale and finally make my way toward the breakroom. I pour the coffee down the drain, sort of in a haze.
I'm sure through Connors eyes they can see everything right? Maybe it's finally time to leave this place, I only stayed because its home. Its where I was created. I have an attachment to Detroit. I walk back to my desk to see Hank, he converses with Connor slightly but not enough to have an actual conversation.
"Laybeth!" Captain Fowler yells from his office, perhaps new cases, maybe a crime scene I must investigate at this moment, anything to not be here
"Coming Sir" I quickly make my way into his office and take a seat he's quiet at first, the silence around me is tense
"I've assigned you to a new case, with your skill set and reputation I have no doubt you'll be a good addition to the team"
"Team?" my stress levels are high, I can feel my insides getting warm, I'm overheating but I do my best to stay calm. The last thing I need to be doing is overriding my system. I assure myself over and over that it isn't what I think it is.
"You'll be working with Hank and the android sent by cyberlife, you're off homicide and I'm putting you on deviant cases" I stand and this catches him off guard, he looks at me with a questioning look, normally I'm happy to be put on new cases anything to help
"this must be a mistake I don't quiet think I'm qualified to be on such cases, nor am I comfortable" he lectures me and for a good five minutes I blank him out, no this isn't about the comfortableness, it's about my life, being able to live as free as I've ever been. All these years doing things a human way. Sure I've cheated but getting to even be in this police station that's where I worked hard. I did the test and training and I kept myself out of cyberlife's watchful eye. I feel a pair of eyes on me and I follow that feeling to meet his. Connor. This is it. The end of my freedom, the end of everything I worked for. If Connor follows his programming it's only a matter of time he figures it out if he hasn't already
I leave the captains office and head back to my desk but not before I hear Hanks name and Connor following after him. Watching the scene unfold, it seems Hank isn't too thrilled with the idea either. I eventually force myself to look at the terminal of deviant cases. I scan every case and im reminded more and more of why I avoid deviant cases.
"Hello" I jump slightly at the sudden voice, I look up to see Connor, who has now taken a seat in front of me, "we've met briefly earlier, I'm happy to be working with you on these cases" I smile slightly and nod
"Yes, perhaps we'll find a reason androids are turning deviant" I wasn't sure what to say, I don't want to be on this investigation but Fowler won't take no for an answer.
"I went through the files, I think I found a place where we can start the investigation, given that it's still fresh" he stands and head towards Hank, but he wants nothing to do with him. I'm assuming the file Connor is talking about is the Ortiz case, the man was murdered in his home by his android. But no android just murders their owner, not without cause. I stand and glance at Connor and Hank, should I get started without them? I'm not too sure if that's possible, we are a team after all. With a heavy exhale I make my way towards them, Connor spots me first
"Hank" he turns toward me, tired and irritated
"Laybeth, so it seems you're working with us"
"yeah it seems that way, I figured we should get started as soon as possible, anything that gets Fowler off our back, we could start with Connors file, Carlos Ortiz" he sighed and unwillingly got up off his chair
"Alright lets go, your sitting up front" I looked at Connor as Hank brushed past me
"I don't think he likes me very much" he walks around the desk and meets me
"he'll adapt it's not like he has a choice" I turn around and almost trip but within that second I catch myself still even then I felt a cold hand on my wrist, I look back and see Connor, I pull my hand back quickly, my sleeve was up this time but I don't want to take any chances
"that's the second time, do your perhaps have a phobia I'm not aware of?"
"no.....i just don't-.....I'm not very comfortable with physical touch" it was the first thing that came to mind, I wasn't really sure how to explain with revealing myself
"oh...." his LED flickers between blue and yellow before landing his calm blue and looking back toward me he steps back "I apologize, I'll be sure to remember that" I nod quickly and walk away from him, following Hank's trail to the car, Connor behind me but a few steps away, I get into the passenger seat but before Connor can get into the back Hank locks the door.
Connor tries a few times to open it but it doesn't budge, Hank then looks over to me
"Do we have to take him?" he sounded as if he wanted me to say no, and maybe if I do that would be enough to drive off and leave Connor behind
"I mean, we don't have to but-"
"Lt. Anderson!" Connor yells, he then knocks on the window "I believe the door is locked" I look at Connor then back to hank and he sighs, unlocking the door, Connor gets in. "I almost considered the possibility of you leaving me"
"I was" Hank then drives, leaving a very quiet and blankless Connor.
