Shortly, we arrived at the orphanage. I let out a sigh of relief as soon as I saw the children hiding under the beds. There were five of them. "Good job on hiding, but we need to move now. Let's go." The kids hurries to the three of us. Conrad and Otto carried two kids while the youngest is with me.
We checked the perimeter before taking off. We fled as fast as we could back to the evacuating area. There were no titans on sight, but I had a bad feeling.
In the blink of an eye, a titan jumps out of nowhere. Otto who was in front, got his legs bitten by the cruel titan. He loosened his grip on the two kids due to the pain from the titan's teeth piercing through his legs, leaving the kids crashing to the roof.
"OTTO!" is all I could scream as I watch him getting eaten. Conrad went to the kids and carried one to give to me while he carried the other one.
"LUNA LET'S GO!" He yelled, his voice breaking. He pulled me like he knew exactly what I was thinking.
I wanted to save Otto but he was already dead and I can't put the children's life in more danger.
I screamed out a cry of frustration as I curse myself for not being able to spot the titan and keep my younger brother safe.
Shortly, Farris met with us midway and saw the gloom expression on Conrad's face and my red eyes. He knew exactly what happened when he didn't see Otto with us. He took the other kid from me, leaving the other one just to make sure I won't take off going back to kill more titans.
We arrived at the evacuating area, but there was a big cart blocking the way towards the other side of the wall causing the delay of the evacuation.
An abnormal titan suddenly appeared, running towards the evacuating area. There were no garrison or trainee on sight to kill it.
I put down the kid I was carrying and went to the titan myself. "LUNA!" I heard Conrad yelling but I ignored him. Sure enough, this titan was faster than the others. I used more gas to catch up with it, I fired the grapple hooks of my gear to the nape of the titan. I pressed the trigger to pull me then I sliced the titan's nape deep.
As the disgusting creature falls, the people looked at me. Then the merchant that's been causing the delay speaks. "Eh? You're not from any regiment. Whatever. Since you're here, get these guys to help me!" He commands me like he's the boss. "I'll make it worth your while!" He adds.
I looked at him with disbelief, ready to snap any moment. "People and those soldiers are dying as we speak. They're fighting and dying because the citizens haven't finished evacuating. My brother died saving these children because none of you didn't even bother saving them."
"Of course, they are! It's their duty to give their hearts to defend the lives and properties of the people! Don't get too conceited now that those freeloaders have something to do after a venture of uselessness! And why would I risk my life to save those children? It's their parents' fault for leaving them!" He retorts.
And with that, I completely lost it. I looked him dead in the eye as I jumped off the decomposing titan. I made my way through the crowd, toward this ignorant shit.
"If you think people dying for other people is a matter of course, then I'm sure you'll understand that a single, precious life can sometimes save the lives of many as well." I say as I walk closer to him.
Two of his men move forward, forming a defense for the merchant. "Just try it!" He threatens. "A military official and I go way back. One word from me and he'll be all over your sorry ass!"
His two men charge at me, I hit the side of their neck by the back of my blades. I halted in front of the merchant, looking down on him.
"How can a dead body talk?" I mutter.
