KJ's POV:

"And you..."

Mac turned to KJ.

"You must be the Brandman kid that covers the route over on Maple."

Although they had never officially met before, KJ had admired the Mackenzie Coyle she had heard of. People described her as this person who doesn't take shit from anyone, who did what ever she wanted, who was free. She was also the girl who just scared off a bunch of assholes who were harassing her. KJ wished she could live such a free life; this Mac Coyle sounded like everything she wanted to be.

"KJ". She replied.

"Yeah. Like Brandman First National Bank --"

"And Brandman Public Library." Tiff interjected.

KJ tugged at her sleeve. She didn't like when people mentioned her family like this, like they were perfect and precious royalty and superior to everyone else. She knew that they must have this effect on people, but she didn't expect Mac Coyle to be so bothered about her family's wealth. KJ looked into Mac's eyes. It was strange the way she was talking to her, and even though she felt like she could sense a glint in her eye, it was obvious this girl did not like her. Maybe if she could explain her family a little bit.

"My grandfather, he's kind of, I --" KJ started.

"He was a big fucking deal, right?" Mac sneered at her.

"Mac."

Yeah...she definitely did not like KJ.   "Sure".

Mac's POV:

And of course, The Brandman kid, who's family seems to own most of Stony Stream. Who does this girl think she is, taking a job like this when she seemed to have all the money she could want? She didn't take this job because she felt like she had to, or because she was barely getting by without it. She didn't take it to get a break from her shitty life at home.

"Yeah. My dad says you people own everything."

Mac felt like she was inferior to her, with her shiny fucking bike and her fancy clothes and her stupid hockey stick. She hated it. But you know what? She can have her fancy stuff, because out here, this time of night? This was Mac's place, and she better stay out of it.

So when the new girl suggests they should split up and stick together in pairs, like hell is she going with the Brandman kid.

"Walkie - talkie freak and preppy, you're team one. New Girl, you're with me."
