5 YEARS AGO.
It was a rainy night. Tatum stood underneath a bus stop a few minutes away from Reign's home. She was freezing with no umbrella, but she didn't care. She needed to see her best friend. She needed to tell her that she made Tatum's heart beat like crazy, how just seeing her makes her whole entire day, and or how she makes her smile for the stupidest most simple things she does. Tatum needed to get it all out of her system, so, she waited for the girl's usual arrival at this bus stop.
"You just have to be honest with her, Tatum. That's all it is." She gives herself a pep talk, trying to get the nerves out of her body.
In what seemed like a blink of an eye, a bus finally arrives, making Tatum swiftly stand up and take a deep breath, not even minding how wet she is from the rain.
The bus door opens and she sees Reign standing on the platform, ready to hop out of the bus. Reign's eyes widen at the realization of the person in front of her. "Are you insane?!" She immediately shouts, quickly approaching Tatum to cover her with an umbrella.
Seeing a cold and shaking Tatum made Reign confused as to what got her into this situation, but she keeps that thought out of her head for now. She had to get Tatum into cover before she gets even wetter than she already is.
"Why were you out in the rain? And even worse, with no umbrella!" Reign started scolding her, but Tatum was completely frozen, unable to feel anything at that moment. Suddenly, all the things she wanted to say to Reign, were completely erased from her mind. Essentially, she blacked out the moment she saw the girl.
"Tatum!" Reign notices Tatum spacing off, and rightfully so, called her attention loudly. "I-I'm okay." Tatum finally snaps out of her trance, and replies.
"You are. You are okay. But that's because I came. What went into your head thinking it was okay to stand outside, in the middle of the night, while raining, without an umbrella? Are you crazy? You might get sick! Just thinking about what could have happened if I didn't arrive makes my head hurt–" Reign's rant was put to a halt, when suddenly, Tatum hugged her.
There were a million different things that were running through Tatum's mind and an equal amount of words she wanted to say to the girl she was currently hugging, but she was scared. She was scared of what might happen. She was scared of what Reign's reaction might be once she hears that her best friend has feelings for her. And above all, Tatum was scared of being selfish.
She knew that if she confessed to Reign, right now, she'd be breaking the rules her parents set up for her. Her wanting to confess to Reign was something she wanted, and only her. In her brain, she was the most selfish person for liking her best friend. It was a love that was merely impossible. It was a love that was uncertainly one-sided. Even if she confessed now, it would mean nothing. It would only make her feel relieved for finally speaking her heart, but it was a decision that would make her best friend confused and her parents angry.
She didn't want to be selfish. Not in this way.
"I'm sorry, Reign." Tatum's sudden apology made Reign soften up. "Why are you apologizing? You didn't do anything wrong. I should be the one apologizing, I shouldn't have lashed out at you like that–" Reign wanted to apologize as well, but Tatum suddenly says something that made Reign's entire system guilty.
"No. You were right. I wasn't in the right mind when I thought of doing that."
"I'm sorry, Tatum, I didn't mean to–" Reign once again attempted to apologize but failed when Tatum hugged her tighter, causing her to be stunned with her heart racing in her chest.
After a while, Tatum finally lets go of the hug and wipes her tears. She gets the umbrella that Reign gave her and faintly smiles at the girl.
"Good night, Reign."
And that was it. That was all Tatum said before walking back home. Three words. Three words were enough for her to not get the girl.
